Summary

Taylor's Service Centre is looking for an Apprentice Vehicle Technician to join our team. You will be working within a professional garage / workshop environment alongside our experienced Vehicle Technicians.

Wage

£16,489.20 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

The Apprentice Vehicle Technician reports to their Mentor and the Workshop Manager. Duties and responsibilites to include but not limited to;

  • Carry out Vehicle Health Checks (VHC’s) / inspections (to identify any mechanicalor electrical issues).
  • Perform routine vehicle servicing tasks, including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, tyre and brake replacement/fitting etc.
  • Repairing or replacing worn or damaged parts.
  • Performing any scheduled maintenance tasks according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Maintaining thorough and up-to-date product knowledge.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment and adheres to all company policies and regulations.
  • Use of the in-house company computer system to accurately record all activity.
  • Assist in all other workshop duties as and when it may be required.
  • Attend any internal / external company training courses aimed at enhancing your skills and keeping up to date with industry changes / standards.
  • Liaise with all departments in a courtesy and professional manner to ensure that the customer and the businesses interests always remain the main priority.
  • Adhering to company manual handling procedures at all times.

  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Delivered at Harlow College, Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (light vehicle) Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard
The Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship addresses a wide range of skills essential for working in the industry.

General course core units (knowledge and skills and competence) include: health and safety in the motor industry, roles and responsibilities, workshop tools and equipment.

Technical units include: routine maintenance, engines, lubrication and cooling, fuel, ignition and air and exhaust, skills in engine units and components, electrical units, chassis systems, transmission system, inspecting using prescribed methods.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade Grade 3 or equivalent)
  • Maths (grade Grade 4 or equivalent)
