Summary

As a Manufacturing Apprentice, you will rotate within the business, gaining a wealth of knowledge and expertise by working side by side with the team. You will have exposure to our extensive in-house manufacturing capabilities, including profiling, folding, machining, fabrication, finishing, assembly, and integration.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

• Rotate through various departments in the business, such as Profiling, Material Preparation, Paint Line, Quality, and Press Stud.

• Rotation through other areas of the business, including Design & Production Planning, Mechanical Build, Acoustic Assembly, Machining, Folding, Welding, Electropolishing, and Shot Blasting.

• Identify your area of specialisation based on your expertise and performance during the rotation.

Course contents
  • Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Comply with environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
  • Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
  • Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
  • Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
  • Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
  • Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.
  • Identify and follow correct joining instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Carry out the relevant preparation before starting the joining fabrication activity.
  • Set up, check, adjust and use joining and related equipment.
  • Weld joints in accordance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements.

Your training plan

Year 1:

During your first year, you will attend college on designated days to undertake a Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing. During this time, you will also rotate through various departments in the business, such as Profiling, Material Preparation, Paint Line, Quality, and Press Stud.

Years 2 & 3:

During your second and third years, you will attend college on designated days to complete your Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing. You will continue your apprenticeship rotation through other areas of the business, including Design & Production

Planning, Mechanical Build, Acoustic Assembly, Machining, Folding, Welding, Electropolishing, and Shot Blasting.

At the same time, you will begin building your workplace portfolio for the Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the competence qualification of your apprenticeship. We will also discuss and identify your area of specialisation based on your expertise and performance during the rotation.

Year 4:

In your fourth year, you will be placed in your chosen department where you will complete the End Point Assessment for your apprenticeship in Metal Fabrication (Apprenticeship Standard Ref: ST0607).

The apprenticeship training is delivered through a combination of workplace learning and regular college attendance. This training will teach you the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the ST0607 standard. On completion the apprentice will receive Metal Fabrication Level 3 qualification. Functional Skills in Maths and English may also be required depending on current level.   

More training information

We support our apprentices with regular reviews conducted by our training coordinator to ensure steady progress in their studies. Additionally, apprentices gain access to digital learning resources and opportunities to participate in local community and internal projects.

GCSE in:

  • 5 subjects including Maths & English (grade Grade 9 – 4 / A* - C)

Other requirements

You MUST be prepared to commit to your work and training for the duration of the apprenticeship. In some cases, you may be required to have a telephone interview with Yeovil College prior to your application being passed on.
