Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

In their daily work, an employee in this occupation may interact with all learners.

This includes but is not limited to high attaining, SEND, EAL, and disadvantaged learners.

Teaching Assistants will also work in partnership with teachers and other professionals within the school and education system, as well as with learners' parents or carers.

  • Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.
  • Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Mathematics (grade 4)

Patience and Empathy - Understanding the unique challenges that young adults face, both academically and personally, is crucial. A teaching assistant should be patient and compassionate, fostering a supportive and non-judgmental environment. Strong Communication Skills - Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with young adults, both one-on-one and in group settings, is essential. This also includes listening skills to better understand their needs. Adaptability - Young adults are in a transitional stage, so being flexible and adaptable to different learning styles, personalities, and evolving situations is critical. Organisational Skills - A teaching assistant should be able to keep track of materials, assignments, and resources while maintaining a structured environment that supports learning. Positive Attitude - A proactive, positive attitude helps to create a motivating learning environment and encourages young adults to engage with their education. Ability to Work Independently and as Part of a Team - You should be able to take initiative when necessary and work well under the direction of the lead teacher while also collaborating with other staff members.
