Summary

WE WANT TO INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE. This apprenticeship will develop the skillset required to produce high quality, metal components and become a fully qualified Welder and Sheet Metal Fabricator. Apprentices are very important for the future of the company as we anticipate that they will take up key roles within the company in the future.

Wage
£19,593.60 a year

Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)

Shift pay is an additional 20% to the above figure for working the alternate week shift pattern described. In addition we have a profit related bonus scheme, pension and life assurance and on-line benefit system.

Hours
Monday to Friday on the double day shift, one week of earlies (5.45am to 1.45pm) and then one week of lates (2.15pm to 10.15pm).

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

The component manufacturing department's responsibility is to cut, fold and weld parts and major fabrications in mild and stainless steel.

You will be taught to:

  • Read and fully understanding engineering drawings
  • Weld to a high commercial standard using both MIG and TIG processes
  • Work in the Laser Cell, Welding, Stores and Toolroom to gain experience in all areas associated with sheet metal
  • Pressure and leak test fabrications
  • Deliver high quality parts for painting and assembly

  • Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Comply with environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
  • Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
  • Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
  • Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
  • Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
  • Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.
  • Identify and follow correct joining instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Carry out the relevant preparation before starting the joining fabrication activity.
  • Set up, check, adjust and use joining and related equipment.
  • Weld joints in accordance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements.

  • In house training including manual handling, fire extinguisher and other associated training courses

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English (grade C/4 or above)
  • Mathematics (grade C/4 or above)

Other requirements

You will be required to attend College for either 1 or 2 days a week. You will enhance your development and practice your skills learnt in a supportive environment in the Company with an experienced mentor.
