Summary

Riding for the Disabled (Washington Riding Centre) are looking for a reliable and committed apprentice to join their established team as a Senior Groom. The successful candidate will be given the platform and support to develop their skills and launch a career in the equine sector.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

Duties include all general horse care:

  • Mucking out
  • Grooming
  • Tacking up
  • Riding
  • Lunging
  • Clipping
  • Providing essential day-to-day care
  • Feeding
  • Cleaning equipment
  • Handling, preparing, exercising the horses
  • Carrying out routine yard duties

Senior Equine Groom Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

  • Training will be delivered in the workplace with a dedicated Trainer Coach, occasional visits to Houghall College may be necessary depending on level of skills and and competencey during the programme

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 9-3 (A*- D))
  • Math's (grade 9-3 (A*- D))

BTEC in:

  • Equine (grade Pass)

Other in:

  • Equine Groom Level 2 (grade Pass)

Other requirements

This role will involve working outdoors in all weathers. You must have experience in the equine field and be a competent rider. You must be able to travel to this location and be on time on a daily basis

About this company

Our group operates from our purpose built, British Horse Society Approved Riding Centre, seven days per week, all year round. We have been in Washington since 1977, having originated in South Shields in 1964. Each week, we provide riding lessons for approximately 130 children and adults with a range of disabilities and special educational needs. Throughout the years, the benefits of Riding for the Disabled activities have become increasingly recognised by medical and educational establishments as a highly effective therapy. Amongst many proven scientific benefits, horse riding can: Provide a positive, unique and enjoyable form of therapy; Bring a new dimension to restricted lives; Encourage independence; Promote mental well-being; Stimulate bonding with these special animals; and contribute to the improvement of a wide range of medical conditions.

  • The opportunity to specialise in areas such as farrier, physiotherapy or equine dentistry are all possible career progressions as is becoming a coach through the BHS scheme
