Summary
Tees Sport, Britain’s leading specialist retail table tennis supplier is recruiting for a Sales Assistant to work in the company’s shop and office in Middlesbrough. The ideal candidate would be one who has played table tennis to a good level and has a strong knowledge of sport and the equipment that is used to play the game.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
The ideal candidate would also have some experience in customer service, a good telephone manner and a knowledge of basic IT to enable communication with customer's, raise an invoice and managing stock records.
Duties to include:
- Welcome customers to the Tees Sport shop, telephone, or online
- Taking messages and passing to the appropriate person
- Process customer orders
- Investigate and resolve customer queries quickly and patiently both by email and over the telephone
- Check product availability for customer orders
- Communicate with customers about their orders, including any delays or changes in delivery
- Maintain accurate customer records and monitor stock levels
- Overseeing sales via website maintenance
- Learn how to use the database system - training will be given
- Work as part of the sales team

Course contents
- Skilled in the use of multiple IT packages and systems relevant to the organisation in order to: write letters or emails, create proposals, perform financial processes, record and analyse data. Examples include MS Office or equivalent packages. Able to choose the most appropriate IT solution to suit the business problem. Able to update and review databases, record information and produce data analysis where required.
- Produces accurate records and documents including: emails, letters, files, payments, reports and proposals. Makes recommendations for improvements and present solutions to management. Drafts correspondence, writes reports and able to review others' work. Maintains records and files, handles confidential information in compliance with the organisation's procedures. Coaches others in the processes required to complete these tasks.
- Exercises proactivity and good judgement. Makes effective decisions based on sound reasoning and is able to deal with challenges in a mature way. Seeks advice of more experienced team members when appropriate.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships within their own team and across the organisation. Demonstrates ability to influence and challenge appropriately. Becomes a role model to peers and team members, developing coaching skills as they gain area knowledge.
- Demonstrates good communication skills, whether face-to-face, on the telephone, in writing or on digital platforms. Uses the most appropriate channels to communicate effectively. Demonstrates agility and confidence in communications, carrying authority appropriately. Understands and applies social media solutions appropriately. Answers questions from inside and outside of the organisation, representing the organisation or department.
- Completes tasks to a high standard. Demonstrates the necessary level of expertise required to complete tasks and applies themself to continuously improve their work. Is able to review processes autonomously and make suggestions for improvements. Shares administrative best-practice across the organisation e.g. coaches others to perform tasks correctly. Applies problem-solving skills to resolve challenging or complex complaints and is a key point of contact for addressing issues.
- Takes responsibility for initiating and completing tasks, manages priorities and time in order to successfully meet deadlines. Positively manages the expectations of colleagues at all levels and sets a positive example for others in the workplace. Makes suggestions for improvements to working practice, showing understanding of implications beyond the immediate environment (e.g. impact on clients, suppliers, other parts of the organisation). Manages resources e.g. equipment or facilities. Organises meetings and events, takes minutes during meetings and creates action logs as appropriate. Takes responsibility for logistics e.g. travel and accommodation.
- Uses relevant project management principles and tools to scope, plan, monitor and report. Plans required resources to successfully deliver projects. Undertakes and leads projects as and when required.

About this company
Tees Sport was launched in September 1976 and was the first specialist mail order supplier of table tennis equipment in the United Kingdom. The main objective from the outset was to provide a first-class service for the supply of specialist table tennis equipment. Tees Sport has a specialist retail shop in Teesside with a full display of blades, rubbers, clothing, shoes plus a table robot and bat testing service available to our visitors. We provide tournament services with up to 40 tables plus nets, posts and surrounds being used at tournaments throughout the United Kingdom. Generally, our sales stand is open at these events and Butterfly Europa Tables plus net and post sets surrounds, scoring machines and Butterfly R40 3 star balls are all provided for these events. Our service is used by the national governing bodies; Table Tennis England, Scotland and Wales and many major tournament organisers. We supplied the equipment for both the World Championships in Manchester, European Championships in Birmingham, Commonwealth Games in both Manchester and Glasgow as well as many National Championships. We supply the National Team kit and club kits for National Associations and top clubs. These include England, Scotland, Wales and many of the leading clubs in the British League. We have agreements to supply many of the top players and coaches with their equipment needs as listed in the Players, Coaches and Team section of our website. We continue to be Britain’s leading supplier of specialist table tennis equipment and our ambition is to continue to provide this service into the future.
After this apprenticeship
This is an 18-month programme with qualification and certificate at the conclusion, and subject to the work being satisfactory from Tees Sport perspective, the successful applicant is likely to receive the opportunity to continue to work for Tees Sport.
