We are looking for a Technical Engineering Degree Apprentice to join our team. This role offers hands-on experience in engineering design, maintenance, and production while working towards a Level 6 Applied Materials Science degree qualification.

Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Key Responsibilities:
- Work on engineering projects, including CAD design, material selection, and process improvements
- Assist with contract reviews, ensuring accurate drawings and production planning
- Learn about machinery setup, maintenance, and preventative care across the site
- Support cost control, purchase order processing, and supplier performance management
- Conduct failure analysis using microscopy and chemical analysis
- Develop technical reports and explore new engineering solutions
- Research and implement new processes and materials to improve efficiency
- Gain production experience to build a well-rounded engineering background
- Learn about tooling, die processes, and material specifications
- Support environmental, health, and safety initiatives, including risk assessments
- Participate in R&D projects to identify cost-saving and efficiency improvements
- Develop financial management skills to support project budgeting
- Build leadership skills to take on supervisory responsibilities in the future

Course contents
- Identify and use the scientific approaches appropriate to one specialist discipline required to solve problems, support new investigations and follow-up experiments in the laboratory.
- Appraise scientific experimentation, independently design and implement new processes according to relevant literature and other data sources interrogated using data mining techniques and input from colleagues.
- Support appraisal of scientific experimentation with numerical and statistical analysis.
- Work autonomously to analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific data and present the results of laboratory work and problem solving clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
- Comply with regulations including compliance with business rules pertaining to record keeping, data integrity, traceability & confidentiality.
- Promote and ensure the application of quality standards, safe working practices and compliance with risk management systems relevant to the workplace in own work and the work of others.
- Use creative thinking and problem solving techniques such as root cause analysis, to challenge assumptions, innovate, make new proposals and build on existing ideas.
- Autonomously plan and prioritise tasks, review and evaluate progress against objectives and investigate alternative scenarios.
- Contribute to the development of specific technical projects across multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ensure that targets are met and maintained, within own area of responsibility, whilst complying with defined company procedures and legislative requirements.
- Lead continuous performance improvement within the scientific and technical environment using process mapping & analysis and root cause analysis that is informed by other appropriate principles, such as lean, six sigma, project and change management.

Over 33 months, you will develop your knowledge and skills in your chosen field to become a leader pushing development, knowledge generation and innovation.
You will be provided with 6 hours per week by your employer to conduct learning and training during working hours. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments.
You’ll be trained by a team of expert tutors from Tiro as well as an experienced workplace mentor at AF Fasteners who, together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.

GCSE in:

A Level in:
- Chemistry, Physics, Maths, or Engineering (grade A* - C)
