Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
You will have the opportunity to gain new skills and knowledge whilst carrying out maintenance and repairs on heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes in your workplace, this will include mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical vehicle systems.
You will be immersed in the fast paced and thriving world of the automotive industry. The tasks you will face will be ever changing, with new technologies and diagnostic techniques constantly being introduced.
Some of the tasks you will be working on include:
- Completion of signed service and inspection records
- Completion of defect reports and associated paperwork to comply with legal requirements
- Prepare vehicles and trailers for annual MOT testing (to a standard to ensure 1st time pass)
- Perform ad-hoc vehicle repairs, investigating and rectifying vehicle defects
- Ensuring the correct and effective safe use of all tools, plant and ancillary equipment
- Maintaining good housekeeping standards carrying out any other duty deemed reasonable by Management

Course contents
- Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
- The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
- Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
- The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
- Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
- Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
- Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
- Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
- Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
- To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.
Your training plan
S&B Automotive Academy is a specialist apprenticeship training provider located in Bedminster, Bristol. The apprentice will work in a FedEx technical workshop to develop their knowledge, skills and behaviours in relation to Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance apprenticeship standard.
- The apprentice will be required to commute to S&B’s Academy to attend 7 weekly training blocks a year throughout the duration of the apprenticeship
- Apprentices are assigned a workplace mentor and a college development coach who will offer support, advice, and guidance by monitoring progress using S&B’s tailored electronic logbook which both employer and the apprentice can access anytime
- Apprentices take a Gateway Assessment at the end of every year to progress onto the next phase of training until the completion of the End Point Assessment
For national apprentices, S&B’s Academy is located a short walk from Bristol Temple Meads Railway Station, and S&B have partnerships with chain hotels to provide accommodation in a standard double room for single occupancy for the duration of the stay. All costs for travel and accommodation while on a weekly training block at S&B are met by the employer, this includes breakfast and a two-course evening meal.
To be considered for this apprenticeship you must have GCSEs, Functional Skills or Key Skills at grade C/4 or above in English and maths (or equivalent), predicated grades are accepted, but applicants will need to complete an initial assessment. Relevant work experience or knowledge is beneficial but not essential.
As a result, you will receive the following qualification:
- Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Standard qualification
- Level 2 Functional Skills in maths & English (if not already exempt)
