Summary

PD Harris are looking for a Painting & Decorating apprentice to join their team, based in Eastbourne General District Hospital. In addition to the job role, there will be day-release to East Sussex College's Eastbourne campus, once a week, term-time only.

Wage
£11,778 a year

Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)

The starting salary will be the Minimum Wage until September 2025. From September 2025-September 2026 the wage will be the Minimum Apprenticeship Wage. In the second year of the apprenticeship, the wage will be Minimum Wage for Age.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Some of the key tasks will include, but are not limited to:

  • Filling and preparation of new and existing walls.
  • Preparation of woodwork, steelwork, cladding compounds and other surfaces.
  • Decoration of all surfaces.
  • Keeping the work area clean and tidy.
  • Care of tools and plant.

Course contents
  • Comply with health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE), respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and dust suppression.
  • Check and safely use working at height equipment for example steps, hop-ups, and podiums.
  • Identify hazards and comply with risk assessments, method statements, control measures and safe systems of work and report to manager when required.
  • Read and interpret information for example from drawings, specifications, work instructions, manufacturer’s safety data sheets and manufacturer’s information such as colour charts and notations.
  • Ensure materials are used efficiently and sustainably including suitable disposal of waste.
  • Prepare work area: remove and store furnishings, fixtures and equipment and reinstate.
  • Protect and prepare a safe working area, surrounding surfaces and environment.
  • Select and use hand tools and equipment.
  • Maintain and store hand tools.
  • Select, use, maintain and store power tools.
  • Prepare internal and external untreated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example: trowelled finishes plaster or render, plasterboard, timber and timber sheet materials; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous).
  • Prepare internal previously coated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example trowelled finishes plaster or render, plasterboard, timber and timber sheet materials.
  • Prepare external previously coated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example trowelled finishes plaster or render, timber and timber sheet materials; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous).
  • Prepare and apply surface coatings to untreated external surfaces for example brick, stone, render, wood, metal using a brush and roller.
  • Apply solvent borne and water borne coating systems using brush and roller to ceilings, walls, linear work (skirting board and architrave) doors: flush and panelled and opening windows.
  • Prepare and apply foundation paper: Cross lining around socket and switches, internal and external angles.
  • Prepare and apply Wallcoverings: Free match or random match finishing papers, vertical hanging, around socket and switches, internal and external angle.
  • Carry out minor repair for example third party damage or post application defect.
  • Apply team working principles.
  • Verbally communicate with others, applying construction terminology.
  • Communicate in writing with others for example, internal and external customers, colleagues.
  • Follow equity, diversity and inclusion guidance.

Your training plan

You will be completing the Level 2 Painter & Decorator apprenticeship. At the end of the apprenticeship, you will gain a grade Pass or Distinction.

If you don’t have a Level 2 maths and English qualification, you will complete Functional Skills in maths and English. You will complete these qualifications alongside your day in college.

Day-release will be at the Eastbourne campus, once a week, term time only. An assessor will visit you every 10-12 weeks onsite. Please ensure you can travel to this location in East Sussex before applying.

College will begin again September 2025.

Painting and decorating both internally and externally, working with a qualified decorator and, when appropriate, working alone. COSH training, asbestos awareness training, PASMA training and any other training or courses deemed necessary.

About this company

Our history goes back many years when The Foundation of P. D. Harris (Henfield) Ltd was created as a sole trader family business in the early 1950’s, later incorporated to a Limited Company in 1975. Alan Harris took over the reins in 1991 as Sole Director, transporting the business through to the 21st Century. Based near Henfield in West Sussex, the Company works primarily on projects within Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Hampshire, as a building contractor. We have been awarded a contract at Eastbourne General District Hospital where this role will be based but we carry out public and private work.

After this apprenticeship

PD Harris has been awarded a contract for another four years at Eastbourne Hospital, so, upon the successful completion of the apprenticeship, there will be a job role for this period. There may then be further contracts.
