Summary
As an apprentice you will complete a three year work based learning apprenticeship with Skills for Security, by attending college and working with a qualified engineer. You will assist in the installation of a range of fire and security products (CCTV Systems, Access Control, Fire Systems, Intruder Alarms). This is a field based role.

Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
- Installing, testing and maintaining different systems – including a range of fire, emergency and security systems
- Learning about electrical and electronic principles – including codes of practice, commissioning, design criteria and installation, testing and maintenance techniques
- Learning about system technologies
- Demonstrating good knowledge of health and safety practices, regulations and legislation within fire, emergency and security environments
- Demonstrating good communication styles and communicating in a clear, articulate and professional manner
Punctual and accurate completion of timesheets on a monthly basis - Whilst this role is based in West Yorkshire the succesful applicant will be expected to travel to a range of locations and sites.

Course contents
- Comply with safety legislation, codes of practice, risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and apply control measures.
- Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
- Apply and implement system design, planning and installations including additional components to existing systems.
- Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose and repair faults.
- Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information.
- Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations and standards.
- Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
- Carries out risk assessments.
- Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector specific terminology.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector specific terminology through written means.
- Plan and install systems cabling.
- Carry out maintenance activities on fire detection and alarm systems and their components.
- Carry out maintenance activities on intrusion alarm, access control, video surveillance (CCTV) and their components.

Your training plan
The training will take place at both work and via block release at college every 8 weeks. The apprentice will be expected to travel and stay at college for a week. Working towards a Level 3 Fire emergency and security systems technician apprenticeship standard, including Functional Skills in English and maths if required.

Skills for Security are one of the leading providers of Fire and Security Apprenticeships in the UK. They have colleges throughout the UK. The course is block relase with a week's attendance in college every 8 weeks.

Other requirements
As an apprentice install engineer you will travel throughout the country and maybe expected to stay away on occasion. The role is a physical job.

After this apprenticeship
A successful apprentice will go on to be a fully qualified fire and security engineer. Following this, there are a number of routes including commissioning engineer, technical surveyor and team leader.
