We’re offering a great opportunity for a talented Apprentice to gain valuable experience and develop key skills that will help you to pursue a career in the construction industry. Based on active construction sites, you’ll have the opportunity to develop key skills in civil engineering and construction operations.

Working hours: 37.5 hrs per week: Monday to Friday 08.30 - 17.00. However, general working hours are site hours 07:30-17:00 (age dependent). Exact hours to be discussed.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Based on site, you will understand the design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure 
  • Work alongside the Site Manager and Site Engineer understanding full site operations, from site set up, construction, installation and handover 
  • Learn how to set out structures, roads, pipework and ducting above and below ground 
  • Keep accurate records for as built data and feed this information back into the Building Information Modelling (BIM) system 
  • Carry out and record quality assurance requirements and work within the team to plan and deliver the works including selecting the correct plant and ordering materials 
  • Work with the site team to carry out health, safety and environmental monitoring in line with the Business Management Systems (BMS)

Course contents
  • Apply engineering principles, using relevant scientific, theoretical and technical know-how to solve well-defined civil engineering problems
  • Apply civil engineering techniques, procedures and methods, and review the results, when measuring and testing, designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining or operating civil engineering systems
  • Employ a range of advanced mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods to interpret and solve civil engineering problems
  • Interpret and compare performance information to choose compliant materials, components or parts
  • Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address well-defined civil engineering problems
  • Produce and interpret civil engineering technical drawings, designs, and models, using analytical and computer-based software packages, recognising the limitations of the software used
  • Produce civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, procedures, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation
  • Comply with, and encourage others to demonstrate, statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures and regulation
  • Complete risk assessments to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks
  • Apply principles of sustainable development, and assess the impact of these in their work
  • Employ project management techniques, measuring and recording progress against civil engineering project plans
  • Assess and report on quality using appropriate management and assurance systems and continuous improvement processes
  • Identify and use resources, equipment and technology to meet project requirements, including specifications, budget and timescales
  • Monitor and manage individual performance, and supervise others, recognising the need to comply with appropriate codes of practice and equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI) requirements
  • Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, using appropriate engineering terminology and conventions
  • Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
  • Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Your training plan

You will receive full on the job training by your dedicated mentor. Your apprenticeship will be supported by an external service provider at college or in a classroom environment. The training is likely to be 1 week blocks with Leeds College of Building. This may require you to be away from home for that time but all related expenses will be covered by JN Bentley.

The qualification you will undertake will be a Level 4 Civil Engineering Senior Technician apprenticeship.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • 3 further subjects (grade A* - C or 9-4)
  • English (grade A* - C or 9-4)
  • Maths (grade A* - C or 9-4)

A Level or equivalent in:

  • Mathematics (grade A* - C)

Desirable qualifications

A Level or equivalent in:

  • Science Subject (grade A* - C)

Once you complete your apprenticeship, you will be considered for further training. This will be discussed with both your mentor and our Learning and Development team.

After completing your initial apprenticeship in civil engineering, you could go on to study further qualifications or a degree apprenticehip.

You will also gain support to gain professional membership of the ICE.
