Summary

The candidate will learn, understand and carry out the assembly of products / sub-assemblies in line with project requirements (drawing specifications / time scales). This will involve working with mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical assemblies / parts.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

Role & responsibilities:

Product Assembly – Carry out the assembly or disassembly of all product requirements as allocated, in line with the specification and timescales issued
Finished Product Conformality – Carry out final testing of the assembled product prior to release for Final Acceptance Testing
Concerns Management – Ensure that all product and process issues are raised, assist with the investigation and implementation of suitable containment action, and where applicable, work with other staff to implement corrective action
Assembly Tooling – Ensure assembly tooling remains fit for purpose, report any defects to the OM/PM, and assist with the calibration of systems when required
Health & Safety – Ensure company health & safety requirements are followed and ensure assembly work areas remain safe & tidy, assist with the correct segregation / handling and disposal of waste material

Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
Reporting work outcomes or issues.
Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
Operating within limits of responsibility.
Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Your training plan

You will study on a Level 3 Engineering Fitter apprenticeship. On completion of this, you will gain a qualification in Engineering at Level 3 standard.

During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis. After this, you will attend the training centre for one day a week for knowledge study.
