Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • As a Medical Engineering Apprentice at Leeds Teaching Hospitals you can expect to work in many different Medical Engineering disciplines across the LTH sites.
  • Some of the areas you will work in are Clinical Engineering, Renal Engineering, Imaging Engineering, Radiation Engineering and Rehabilitation Engineering.
  • You will develop a broad range of skills which will prepare you for a successful career in your chosen area of Medical Physics & Engineering.
  • Alongside your practical training you will undertake a work based Level 4 qualification in Healthcare Science Apprenticeship training programme specialising in Medical Engineering.

Course contents
  • Act in line with legislation, standard operating procedures, codes of conduct and ways of working that apply to own role.
  • Work within the scope of the role, the limits of own knowledge and skills and support others to do the same.
  • Act in line with probity requirements and support others to do the same.
  • Promote mental health, wellbeing and resilience in the workplace.
  • Provide technical healthcare-science-based services relevant to own role.
  • Recognise problems and seek technical solutions to them and support others to do the same.
  • Perform a range of equipment management activities appropriate to own role including fault-finding, preventative maintenance, calibration or repair.
  • Contribute to the drafting or revising of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Analyse, interpret, record and present healthcare science technical data.
  • Provide or support the provision of person-centred care.

Your training plan

Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End-Point Assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement, the apprenticeship’s English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3. A British Sign Language (BSL) qualification is an alternative to the English qualification for those whose primary language is BSL.

  • Must attend Dudley College 5 days per year for training
  • Remaining training to be taken in the work place

After this apprenticeship

This apprenticeship is offered on a two year fixed term contract.  It does not guarantee permanent employment but on successful completion of the apprenticeship, which should take 2 years, the qualifications, experience and skills gained provide an opportunity to apply for and or progress to substantive roles with a possible starting salary of £25,147 and also further study, development and progression.
