Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

As an Apprentice Fleet Technician, you’ll learn how to:

  • Service and repair mechanical faults on our vehicles as well as fault diagnosis using the latest computer software packages
  • Follow our rigorous health and safety standards, keeping yourself and others safe
  • Work as part of a dedicated team focused on ensuring that our vehicles and plants are maintained efficiently
  • Service and repair a wide range of vehicles and be able to identify any faults
  • Carry out routine maintenance, making sure our vehicles are always running in tip top condition

Heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician (level 3)

Course contents
  • Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
  • The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
  • Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
  • The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
  • To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

Your training plan

  • Your apprenticeship will last 42 months, and successful apprentices will achieve Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician, Level 3 standard, endorsed by the Institute for Apprenticeships

More training information

During your apprenticeship, you may need to travel to your place of study. If you’re from outside the area, accommodation will be provided by United Utilities during this period (excluding weekends). Please consider travel requirements and staying away from home if applicable.

You will need to be mobile in this role, we’ll contribute up to £500 towards driving lessons and tests to help to get you on the road!

GCSE in:

  • 5 subjects incl. Maths, English & Science/Tech (grade A-C or 9-4)

Other in:

  • - (grade equivalent A-C or 9-4)
