A typical working day includes you starting from home at 8am and travelling to your first location. A typical finishing time is 4pm, 37 hours per week travelling around your allocated area. Monday to Friday.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

As our Instrumentation, Control & Automation Technician Apprentice you will work to develop competence in: 

  • Excellent standards of performance in Health, Safety and Environmental management
  • Carry out safe isolation to the current IET regulations
  • Carry out fault finding techniques on control circuits up to the PLC (Programmable logic controller)
  • Produce maintenance reports
  • Program PLCs (Programmable logic controller), including Schneider, Allen Bradley & Mitsubishi equipment
  • Maintain, calibrate and certify analytical instrumentation
  • Fault finding and repair of Safety instrument Loops
  • Work in accordance with Yorkshire Water Task Lists, Safe Working Procedures and safe systems of work

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

  • The qualification is delivered by Appris on a day release basis for the first 2 years of the 4 year apprenticeship
  • The remainder of the 2 years are focused around building your competence and portfolio of evidence

  • Appris are a specialist Engineering college on Sticker Lane in Bradford and a weekly travel to Bradford is required

GCSE in:

  • English (grade C/4)
  • Mathematics (grade C/4)

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Science or Engineering (grade C/4/pass)

Other requirements

This role requires you to work outside in all weathers, it also requires you to travel across the Yorkshire region. As part of your enrolment onto your college course you will be expected to pass a colour blind assessment.
