Summary

The hydraulics apprentice will learn how to gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of hydraulic systems and components. The apprentice will learn how to read and interpret hydraulic circuit drawings. The successful applicant should be able to travel to TDR Longbenton for 10 weeks practical training and day release BTec for 2 years.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

The hydraulics apprentice will learn how to gain knowledge and understanding of hydraulic systems and components. The apprentice will learn how to read and interpret hydraulic circuit drawings.

The apprentice will learn how to:

Build hydraulic systems and subsequently learn the process of installation
Commissioning, disassembling fault-finding/diagnostics and service.
The apprentice may get involved in repair, retrofits, and upgrades on complete hydraulic systems and components
The apprentice will work in-house and on-site to suit business needs

The apprentice will gain the following skills:

Understand and interpret hydraulic system drawings
Ability to build and test complete hydraulic systems, and sub-assemblies from assembly drawings
Ability to assess and identify hydraulic parts in need of repair from Drawings/BOMs
Troubleshoot hydraulic installations
Experience of hydraulic piston pumps, pressure and flow control valves, directional control valves, check valves, and double and single-acting cylinders.
Experience in field diagnosis

Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
Reporting work outcomes or issues.
Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
Operating within limits of responsibility.
Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Your training plan

The candidate will complete an Engineering Fitter standard and sit an end-point assessment.

Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.

Prcatical training & BTec will take place at TDR Longbenton

GCSE in:

English Language or English Literature (grade grade 5 or above)
Maths (grade grade 5 or above)
