Summary

Maria's Animal Shelter are offering a fantastic opportunity for an Animal Care and Welfare Assistant to join their team. As an apprentice you will earn and learn whilst your working in an animal care industry. You will learn valuable skills and experiences which are involved in supporting the care and wellbeing of different animal species.

Monday to Sunday, work pattern will vary but will be scheduled from 8.00am to 4.00pm, fortnightly rolling rota.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Duties to include but are not limited to: 

  • Adhering to animal care and welfare needs in accordance to the 5 freedoms
  • Cleaning animal housing, equipment and other spaces to a high standard
  • Practicing safe use of disinfectants
  • Meeting the dietary needs of various animal species
  • Preparing and measuring food safely 
  • Monitoring animals for signs of ill health, injury and disease
  • Providing medication
  • Providing enrichment for animals according to their species
  • Practicing safe and confident handling of various animals species

  • You will be working towards a Level 2 Animal Care & Welfare Assistant Apprenticeship Standard.
  • You will receive on and off-the-job training and support from an assessor and an Apprenticeship advisor.
  • You will be required to attend Cornwall College Duchy Rosewarne on a weekly basis as part of the apprenticeship training.

About this company

Maria Mulkeen went to Duchy College, in the year 2000 to pursue her passion for animals and their welfare. After which came an opportunity to start her own animal shelter on a perfect little piece of land in Probus, Cornwall. Marias Animal Shelter started off with one pony and is becoming a big success, taking in a range of animals. Every spare moment Maria has, goes into caring for the animals and fundraising to keep the shelter going. This remarkable lady aims to keep all the animals healthy and happy and provides a permanent home for any that no suitable new home can be found for.
