Summary

Join our fabulous team at Roo's Tearoom as an assistant chef! We're a popular café that's been serving the community for a year, and we're looking for passionate individual to support our head chef and help us grow. You'll work in a close knit team where collaboration is key, you'll gain valuable skills through hands on training.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Prepare ingredients for daily menu items
  • Assist the head chef in cooking and plating up
  • Maintain cleanliness and organisation in the kitchen
  • Help with checking stock/rotation
  • Learn cooking techniques and kitchen operations
  • Support team members during busy periods
  • Clearing down & washing up 
  • Adapt and produce dishes to meet special dietary, religious and allergenic requirements
  • Communicate internally and externally with customers and colleagues

Course contents
  • Check, prepare, assemble, cook, regenerate, hold and present food meeting the needs of the customers and maintaining organisational standards and procedures.
  • Use kitchen tools and equipment correctly to produce consistently high quality dishes according to specifications.
  • Take responsibility for the cleanliness, organisation and smooth running of the work area.
  • Produce dishes to suit individuals’ specific dietary, religious and allergenic  needs as required.
  • Operate within all regulations, legislation and procedural requirements.
  • Complete and maintain documentation to meet current legislative guidelines.
  • Use effective methods of communication with all colleagues, managers and customers to promote a positive image of yourself and the organisation.
  • Work in a fair and empathetic manner to support team members while offering a quality provision.
  • Work to ensure customer expectations are met.
  • Work collaboratively to uphold the vision, values and objectives of the organisation.
  • Use technology appropriately.
  • Maintain quality and consistency in food production by using resources in line with organisations’ financial constraints, style, specifications and ethos.
  • Identify own learning style, personal development needs and opportunities and take action to meet those needs.
  • Use feedback positively to improve performance. 

Your training plan

Production Chef Level 2.

The apprentice will receive training directly in the kitchen at Roo's.

They will learn hands-on from the head chef & manager, gaining practical skills and knowledge about food preparation, cooking techniques, and kitchen operations. This on job training will help them develop their culinary skills while working alongside a supportive team.

GCSE in:

  • English (grade Level 1)

Desirable qualifications

BTEC in:

  • Food Tech (grade 2)

I would like the applicant to consider the importance of teamwork, as they will be expected to work collaboratively with the team. Additionally, they should be willing to help with tasks such as washing up, cleaning, and keeping the work area tidy. I'm looking for someone who is eager to learn, and has a positive attitude.

Roo's Tearoom is a cosy and inviting spot where we pride ourselves on creating a warm atmosphere for our guests to relax & enjoy. Named after my dog Roo, who is a cherished member of my family, Roo's offers a menu filled with fresh homemade food & sweet treats. Opened October 2024, Roo's Tearoom is inspired by the dream of my granny (Doreen) Who always wanted to have her own café. Although she's no longer with us, we are fulfilling her vision by providing a welcoming environment where everyone feels like family. We're also proud to be a dog friendly tearoom.
