Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Work with individual students or small groups of students in the classroom under the direct supervision of teaching staff.
  • Support students to understand instructions, promote independent learning, and encourage inclusion for all students.
  • Assist the teacher in behavior management and help keep students on task.
  • Support students' social and emotional well-being, reporting issues to the teacher as appropriate.
  • Prepare and organize the learning environment and resources, including photocopying, filing, displaying, and presenting student work and teaching materials as directed by the teacher.
  • Record basic student data.
  • Facilitate student learning through play.
  • Organize and supervise games and activities.
  • Assist in escorting students on educational visits.
  • Invigilate exams and tests.
  • Support students with eating, dressing, and hygiene needs as required, while encouraging independence.
  • Supervise students during transitions between lessons and when entering and leaving the school site.
  • Provide first aid, subject to appropriate training.

  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.
  • Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
