Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Primary Duties include:
- Greeting patients, booking them in to clinics
- Answering the telephone, booking appointments
- Taking accurate messages where appropriate
- Registering new patients and temporary patients – checking identity
- Working closely with and supporting Doctors (GPs), Nurses, Midwives, Health Visitors / Nursery Nurse, Phlebotomists, Healthcare Assistants, Counsellors, Visiting Consultants
- Maintaining electronic appointment systems.
Additional Duties may include:
- Maintaining website information
- Helping to draft patient newsletters
- Liaising with hospitals, social services and other agencies
- Maintaining electronic medical records, scanning letters and medical documents and use of an electronic document management system
- Using MS Office software WORD and EXCEL / Networked computers
- Using the EMIS web medical records system
- Using emails and Internet / NHS.Net
- Maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and information governance
- Typing confidential referral letters and reports
- Use of office equipment: computers, phones, printers, photocopiers, laminator
- Assisting with health promotion campaigns e.g. Flu vaccination, Cervical screening, Childhood immunisation programme, Chlamydia screening etc
As part of your apprenticeship, you will be responsible for both reception and admin tasks, gaining invaluable experience in a fast-paced, patient-focused environment.
You will be supported by an expert and friendly team at Compass House Medical Centres, and will also attend weekly taught sessions at South Devon College as part of your Customer Service Apprenticeship.

Course contents

Your training plan
- You will be supported by an expert and friendly team at Compass House Medical Centres, and will also attend weekly taught sessions at South Devon College as part of your Customer Service Practitioner Level 2 Apprenticeship
- Over the 18-month Apprenticeship you will receive all the help and support available to achieve your apprenticeship and have the skills to help you further a career with the NHS

Essential qualifications
GCSE or equivalent in:
- English (grade 4/C)
- Maths (grade 4/C)

Compass House Medical Centres is an CQC outstanding rates GP practice covering Brixham, Galmpton & Kingswear, with over 15,000 patients and 70 members of staff.
After this apprenticeship
- Following successful completion of the apprenticeship, a permanent role could be offered in the practice
- Several of our past apprentices have successfully transitioned into permanent positions, continuing to thrive and contribute to the surgery to this day. We have also had apprentices who showed an interest in the nursing side of the practice who have even moved on to join our nursing team, progressing their careers within the NHS
