Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Here’s how our porter to HGV driver 5-year industry career pathway works, year by year:
You start as a removals operative apprentice earning £21,157. You’ll learn how the removals industry operates, develop practical skills and specialist knowledge, and accompany our trained drivers out on the road.
At the end of your first year, if you need to, you’ll train to get your driving licence and then spend year 2 training as a van driver earning £23,107.
In year 3, you’ll work as an experienced van driver earning £25,057
After a year as a van driver, we enrol you on a LGV apprenticeship, where you’ll learn to drive an articulated truck, earning £27,007
Year 5 and beyond will see you working as a qualified HGV driver, earning £28,957.

- Follow procedures in line with health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Comply with Industry specific regulations and legislation relating to the moving and handling of items for example, inland domestic moving, commercial moving, overseas moving, and storage.
- Identify and document hazards and risks in the workplace. Complete risk assessments. Apply control measures to manage risk.
- Organise and prioritise own work in line with permitted time allowances.
- Apply standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies.
- Apply team working principles.
- Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
- Select packing materials appropriate to the individual task.
- Follow processes for moving, handling, packing and unpacking items.
- Load or unload identified goods.
- Use manual handling techniques and equipment, for example, lifting equipment, vehicle ramps or platforms.
- Direct the movement of vehicles or mechanical handling equipment (MHE).
- Use tools, machinery, and personal protective equipment (PPE) following manufacturers instructions.
- Follow company procedures and quality standards, for example housekeeping, clean equipment and machinery, and keep work area tidy.
- Dismantle and reassemble items using tools and equipment in line with company policy.
- Record or enter task information - paper based or electronic.
- Use information technology and digital systems. Comply with GDPR and cyber security.
- Communicate in writing with others for example, clients, colleagues, and managers.
- Communicate with others verbally for example, clients, colleagues, and managers.
- Follow equity, diversity, and inclusion principles.
- Carry out and record learning and development activities.

You will be expected to complete monthly online training to develop skills and knowledge around your role. Also, you will be required to achieve your functional skills in Maths and English at Level 1, only if the candidate does not hold GCSE’s Level 4 or equivalent. (Evidence is required).

Other requirements
Due to the training offered, you will need to be aged 16+ and physically fit and able, to carry out lifting and moving tasks all day and will be required to move and lift weights of up to 25kg. You will be expected to complete monthly online training to develop skills and knowledge around your role. About this company

After this apprenticeship
During year 1, you will undertake on-the-job and online classroom training as part of the removals operative apprenticeship, resulting in your achievement of a level 2 certification. If you haven’t already achieved GCSEs in Maths and English at grade 4 or above, you can undertake these as part of your apprenticeship.
