Summary

Support customers with all aspects of daily living, so they can enjoy the best possible quality of life. You'll mostly work independently with customer(s) in their own home. Providing care offers many rewards, but can also be challenging. Compassion, good communication skills, a calm and caring manner are essential to be a successful Carer.

This will include a combination of care provision and, off the job training. Care provision will include working 12-hour shifts including; days, waking nights and sleeping nights. Shifts to be confirmed.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Provide safe and person centred support to the people we support as detailed in their individual Care Plan

Follow agreed Care Plans to support individuals in the following areas (if applicable):

  • Personal care
  • Medication support
  • Activities of daily living
  • Moving & Handling
  • Managing Finances
  • Nursing Care
  • Cognitive rehabilitation therapy
  • Positive Behaviour Support
  • Have an open-minded approach to the people we support and be flexible, adaptive and considerate of their needs at all times
  • Work in an anti-discriminatory manner mindful of the lifestyle, values, customs and spiritual beliefs of the individual

Encourage and enable individuals to achieve personal goals such as:

  • Increased social, emotional and psychological well-being
  • Increased physical wellbeing
  • Increased ability to maintain their own home
  • Increased independence
  • Demonstrate respect for the decisions, likes and dislikes of the people we support
  • Deliver personal care with dignity and respect to meet the specific requirements of the individual
  • Ensure Confidentiality at all times, in keeping with the Data Protection Act
  • Commit to following safeguarding guidelines to protect the adults or children in your care
  • Ensure the health, well-being and safety of the people you support by following agreed Care Plans and raising any concerns, including accidents and incidents promptly
  • Collaborate with the Regional Team Leads and Case Managers to regularly review and make recommendations for changes to Care Plans

Course contents
  •  Support individuals they are working with according to their personal care/support plan
  • Ask for help from an appropriate person when not confident or skilled in any aspect of their role
  • Provide individuals with information to enable them to have a choice about the way they are supported
  • Encourage individuals to participate in the way their care and support is delivered
  • Ensure the individual knows what they are agreeing to regarding the way in which they are supported
  • Contribute to the on-going development of care/support plans for the individual they support
  • Support individuals with cognitive, physical or sensory impairments
  • Ensure dignity is at the centre of all work with the individuals they support, their families, carers and advocates
  • Demonstrate all work is person centred, accommodating the individual’s needs, wishes and preferences
  • Demonstrate empathy (understanding and compassion) for individuals they support
  • Demonstrate courage in supporting people in ways that may challenge their personal/cultural beliefs

Other requirements

This position will be based in and around Blakelaw, Newcastle NE5 The gentleman you will be supporting has an acquired brain injury (ABI), and some restricted vision. His care team work on a 2:1 support ratio, therefore you will always be working with a more senior member of the team. The gentleman uses a hoist at home and an electric wheelchair to access the community. The role involves all aspects of personal care and some clinical support, delivered by our Registered Nurse and Clinical Educator.
