An exciting opportunity for an Advanced Calibration Apprentice has become available at our world-class aerospace manufacturing facility in East Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. Working with a wide range of measurement equipment and processes, our four-year programme will provide you with the development and training that you need to start your career.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • You will do a mixture of both classroom and on-the-job training
  • You will be involved in using and calibrating equipment for taking measurements, in order to keep our operational areas compliant to both customer and regulatory requirements
  • You will be working in conjunction with the Level 3 Metrology Technician Apprenticeship Standard.

Course contents
  • Identify measurement needs and make informed decisions about the measurement process and timescales required, including selection of; tools, equipment, instrumentation and software programs. 
  • Access and interpret information and documentation to support the measurement process including; data, manuals, specifications, catalogues, calibration certificates and computer-generated information.
  • Prepare the work environment and perform tests and checks on measurement tools, equipment, instrumentation and software programs and determine suitability for use.
  • Take action when non-conforming tools, equipment, instrumentation, materials and software programs have been identified.
  • Plan and perform measurement tasks to ensure verifiable results, using measurement tools, equipment, instrumentation and software programs, following specified procedures and methodologies. 
  • Retrieve, analyse, interpret, validate and record measurement results and data in line with specifications. 
  • Contribute to the production of records, reports and other measurement documentation. 
  • Communicate relevant and specific information through various channels to meet customer requirements. 
  • Comply with statutory regulations, national and international standards, industry and organisational procedures and requirements relating to codes of conduct when carrying out measurement tasks. 
  • Comply with relevant Health and Safety legislation, regulation, standards, industry and organisational policies and procedures and requirements relating to safe working practices. 
  • Comply with policies and procedures relating to the preparation, storage, standards, control and handling of samples, tools, equipment, instrumentation and software programs. 

Your training plan

You will work towards a nationally recognised Level 3 Apprenticeship certificate in Metrology Technician.

This standard meets the requirements of Registered Engineering Technician (EngTech) and Registered Science Technician (RSciTech). The apprentice will be eligible for registration of EngTech and/or RSciTech on completion of the Apprenticeship. Upon receipt of the apprenticeship certificate, individuals are eligible to apply for RSciTech through a shortened application route.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade Grade 4 and above)
  • Maths (grade Grade 5 and above)
  • Science (grade Grade 4 and above)
  • two further subjects (grade Grade 4 and above)

Other requirements

PLEASE ALSO NOTE the position requires UK National Security Vetting (UKNSV) Security clearance (SC) due to the nature and responsibilities of the work carried out. In order for us to obtain an SC you usually need to have been resident in the UK for a minimum of 5 years to current date (but we do assess each case individually)

On completion of your apprenticeship, you are likely to move into the following career discipline:

  • Calibration Engineer (Mechanical) - To support the company’s business by the calibration and maintenance of Cowes site mechanical test equipment within scheduled timescales and quality standards.
