Summary

Global Shipping Services is launching the Port and Shipping Apprentice programme 2024, seeking to recruit “Port Operative Apprentices”. The Company will offer a Safe and Healthy, inclusive environment where each Port Operative Apprentice can achieve their potential

The candidate must be flexible to cater for the changing demands of the Port and Shipping sector. As a guide, a normal working day ranges from 6.00am - 6.00pm Monday to Friday with weekends being on a as required basis.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

These are exciting times, and the Company is aiming to successfully recruit a number of persons as Port Operative Apprentices. 

A Port Operative Apprentice will gain front-line operational experience in

  • Loading/unloading vessels
  • Vehicles
  • Cargo handling
  • Plant operations
  • Warehousing/storage, and complex operations

Port and Shipping experience is not essential as all training will be provided with full support from the Company and its external partners.

The Port Operative Apprentice will be based at one of our three Ports on the Humber (Immingham, Hull and Goole) but will also gain knowledge and experience from all operations across the Humber.

  • Follow port sector procedures in line with sector regulations and legislation.
  • Follow procedures in line with health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Identify and report hazards and risks in the workplace. Take action to mitigate hazards and risk.
  • Comply with safe systems of work and apply control measures.
  • Identify hazardous goods.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Comply with port security measures.
  • Follow instructions provided from information, for example, text, data, job card, work instructions, risk assessments, method statements, operation manuals, or permits to work.
  • Use equipment and machinery.
  • Follow procedures to ensure safe movement of traffic, goods, or pedestrians around the port.
  • Carry out pre-operational checks.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Follow techniques for waste management across the port.
  • Escalate issues of concern.

  • Uses cargo handling techniques.
  • Use toolbox talks.
  • Classify cargo.
  • Load, unload, or store cargo.
  • Follow a loading, lift or stow plan.
  • Identify, record and report pre-existing damage or new damage.
  • Secures the load, for example to maintain the integrity of the cargo, or to prevent damage to the vessel.
  • Use techniques to coordinate planned cargo movements for example, hand signalling or radio communication.
  • Provide equipment or assistance for passengers to embark and disembark a vessel.
  • Follow procedures for secure passenger access.
  • Carry out operational tasks related to passenger vessels, such as loading and unloading commodities and products, assisting the vessel, its occupants and vessel staff.
  • Follow procedures for damaged, lost, unclaimed, unlabelled, unaccompanied, or suspect baggage.
  • Use techniques and equipment to handle baggage and items.
  • Complete site checks.
  • Take action to mitigate the risks to passengers where there are adverse weather conditions.
  • Identify customer needs and deliver a service to meet those needs, resolving queries or problems.

Your training plan

Port Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard:

  • The Port Operative Apprentice will have a designated Line Manager but also a Mentor to assist them through the 2-year pathway while they undertake their continued professional development
  • Throughout the 2 year period, the Port Operative Apprentice will be expected to hit key milestones
  • A range of training courses will be provided but as a guide, this includes Port Operative foundation course, slinging/signalling, lifting operations, warehousing, plant/machinery, forklift truck, Health and Safety, Quality, and Environmental management

After this apprenticeship

  • The Port Operative Apprentice programme is run for 2 years and upon successful completion, this leads to a transition into a promoted role of Multi Skilled Port Operative
