Summary

The post holder will assist in the maintenance/housekeeping of the College Management Information Systems and designing/producing reports from them. There will also be an element of testing, validation and problem-solving data issues where appropriate.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • To assist and support in the preparation of SQL reports for management, staff and external agencies utilising relevant reporting software and output in an appropriate format
  • To be 1st line support for the MIS developer team for users of the Student Records database and others relevant systems
  • To assist in the administration and support of Reports and Dashboards used by all stakeholders across the organisation
  • To assist with the daily ad-hoc data requests from college database systems
  • To assist with relevant validation checks of the Student Records database
  • To assist with the development and maintenance of the Student Records database and other systems as appropriate
  • To implement basic system administration/housekeeping of the Management Information Systems
  • To work with college staff to enable them to clarify and define their information needs, ensuring that specifications for development provide the required solution
  • Process amendments to update the student database
  • Any other duties commensurate with the post

  • Source and migrate data from already identified different sources.
  • Collect, format and save datasets.
  • Summarise and explain gathered data.
  • Blend data sets from multiple sources and present in format appropriate to the task.
  • Manipulate and link different data sets as required.
  • Use tools and techniques to identify trends and patterns in data.
  • Apply basic statistical methods and algorithms to identify trends and patterns in data.
  • Apply cross checking techniques for identifying faults and data results for data project requirements.
  • Audit data results.
  • Demonstrate the different ways of communicating meaning from data in line with audience requirements.
  • Produce clear and consistent technical documentation using standard organisational templates.
  • Store, manage and distribute in compliance with data security standards and legislation.
  • Explain data and results to different audiences in a way that aids understanding.
  • Review own development needs.
  • Keep up to date with developments in technologies, trends and innovation using a range of sources.
  • Clean data i.e. remove duplicates, typos, duplicate entries, out of date data, parse data (e.g. format telephone numbers according to a national standard) and test and assess confidence in the data and its integrity.

  • Prioritise within the context of a project.

Firebrand’s sector leading Level 3 Data Technician (L3DT) Apprenticeship Programme trains apprentices to be able source, format and present data securely in a relevant way for analysis using basic methods. Our programme will enable apprentices to:

About this company

Southport Education Group is a group of colleges providing further education to Southport and surrounding areas. There are 2 campuses which serve the area, one primarily focused around A level provision and the other for technical qualifications but some cross over does happen.

After this apprenticeship

Employment will be on a fixed term basis for the duration of the apprenticeship. There may be an opportunity for permanent employment following the end of the fixed term period and successful completion of the apprenticeship.
