Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

We are looking for a passionate individual who is motivated into working in the technical side of our business.

The role of a Vehicle Service Technician is to maintain, service and repair Light Vehicles such as Cars up to 3.5 tonnes to a consistently high standard.

The apprenticeship programme is ideal for someone who is looking to begin their journey to becoming a qualified Service Technician and who wants to develop a long-term career. Daily Responsibilities are geared toward training in all areas of vehicle mechanics and electronics, from engine and exhaust systems to air conditioning and security features. The duties of a Light Vehicle Service Technician may include:

• Servicing vehicles – carrying out checks and maintenance according to the manufacturers’ guidelines

• Repairing and replacing faulty parts and components

• Advising the Service Receptionist about required repairs

• Producing time estimates

• Maintaining repair and service records

In due time additional skills are covered:

• Electric Vehicle Awareness

• F Gas – Refrigerant Handling

• 4 Wheel Alignment

All learners will be required to attend college for additional instruction and assessments as the course demands.

Course contents
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Your training plan

You will be studying at North Kent College at Gravesend one day per week.

GCSE in:

Having successfully completed the Light Vehicle Apprenticeship. A full time permanent position will become available giving further progression into more specialist areas: Diagnostics Tuning, MOT Testing.
