Summary
We have an opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Apprentice Vehicle Technician. As an apprentice, you'll play a key part in supporting the maintenance and repair of a range of vehicles, learning diagnostic skills, and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the automotive industry.

Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
- Work alongside skilled technicians to inspect, diagnose, and repair various vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical components.
- Perform basic service tasks.
- Learn to use diagnostic equipment and software to identify vehicle faults.
- Ensure a clean, safe, and organised workspace by following all health, safety, and environmental protocols.
- Assist in completing service records and maintenance documentation, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
- Attend and participate in all training sessions with Mantra Learning

Course contents
- S1: Contribute to maintaining a healthy and safe workplace, including the maintenance of key equipment and carrying out general housekeeping
- S2: Carry out stock procedures including dealing with routine stock deliveries, placing stock into storage, carrying out stock rotation duties and ordering parts for customers following company procedures
- S3: Carry out vehicle safety inspections and routine maintenance in line with manufactures specifications or approved schedules, company procedures and complete approved documentation.
- S4: Make recommendations to customers based on the results of inspections, ensuring that sales recommendations are accurate and fully costed, are ethical and in the best interests of the customer at all times, using language that is transparent and avoids jargon.
- S5: Carry out replacement/repair and balancing of a range of light vehicle tyres, including ultra-low profile, directional, asymmetric and run-flat tyres fitted to a range of wheel sizes and types
- S6: Carry out the replacement of components on a specific range of vehicle systems including Steering & Suspension, Braking systems, Battery & Charging systems, exhaust systems and Air-Conditioning systems
- S7: Carry out 4-wheel Geometry operations including adjustments on a range of vehicles with different suspension and steering systems
- S8: Use a range of specialist tools & equipment, mechanical & electrical measuring tools and diagnostic equipment to support fault identification and repair.
- S9: Identify & procure correct parts to meet specific customer requirements
- S10: Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgements on wear and serviceability.
- S11: Deal with and resolve low-level customer complaints
- S12: Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and colleagues
- S13: Use specific company IT systems within the workplace, including Point-of-sale systems and hand-held devices.

The Level 2 Autocare apprenticeship will be delivered over 19 months with the potential to progress onto Light Vehicle Level 3 which will last a further 24 months.

After completing an apprenticeship as a Vehicle Technician, there are several exciting career paths and progression opportunities available. These can vary depending on your areas of interest and skill set but generally include the following options:
- Qualified Vehicle Technician
Role: Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you can become a fully qualified Vehicle Technician, taking on more complex diagnostics, repair tasks, and independent service work
- Senior or Master Technician
Role: As a Senior or Master Technician, you’ll handle advanced repair and diagnostic work and often mentor junior technicians or apprentices.
- Diagnostic Technician / Specialist
Role: Specialise in vehicle diagnostics, focusing on identifying and resolving complex mechanical and electronic issues.
- Workshop Supervisor or Manager
Role: Oversee the operations of the workshop, managing teams, scheduling repairs, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Service Advisor or Customer Service Specialist
Role: Shift from hands-on technical work to a customer-facing role, where you’ll provide advice on repairs, liaise with technicians, and manage customer expectations.
- Technical Trainer / Educator
Role: Train and mentor new apprentices, or work within an educational setting to instruct the next generation of vehicle technicians.
- Self-Employment or Opening a Workshop
Role: Many technicians choose to become self-employed or start their own automotive repair business.
Each of these roles can build on the skills developed during your apprenticeship, and there are many routes for further certification and specialisation. The demand for skilled vehicle technicians remains strong, especially as the industry adapts to new technologies like electric and hybrid vehicles.
