Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Our Engineering Technician Apprenticeship is a 4-year program, which can lead onto one of the following 4 areas of technical expertise:

Manufacturing / Engineering Support Technician - this role provides technical support and expertise for all areas of the Manufacturing and Engineering functions. 

Metrology Engineer - this role involves checking aircraft parts to ensure they are delivered correctly and to the highest standard.  

Quality Engineer - This role provides experience in all aspects of aircraft design and manufacture.  

Tooling Engineer - Tool Engineers use their skills to design, modify or repair tooling that will be used to produce aircraft parts.

Training

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Course contents

Your training plan

Year 1: The majority of your first year will be working offsite at college. Towards the end of the first year, you will undertake a return to site induction followed by onsite GKN training.

Years 2 & 3: You will undertake Business Familiarisation rotation placements. During your placements, you will document work that you complete and review this regularly with your GKN training advisor.

Year 4: You will complete your Apprenticeship and continue on-the-job training in your final department. This is where you will complete your Qualification as well as your End Point Assessment.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English (grade 4/C or equivalent)
  • Science (grade 4/C or equivalent)
  • maths (grade 5/C or equivalent)

Let the company know about other relevant qualifications and industry experience you have. They can adjust the apprenticeship to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

You must have at least five GCSE’s Maths: 9 – 5 English: 9 – 4 Science: 9 – 4 Plus two more: 9 – 4 If you live outside the EU you will need a UK work permit before you can apply for an apprenticeship.
