Summary

We are currently seeking motivated and ambitious individuals to join our team as Degree Apprentices. This is a unique opportunity for you to gain practical experience, earn a salary, and achieve a fully funded apprenticeship in Control Systems Engineering.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Over the length of the programme, you will:

  • Assist in the design, development, program and test of mission-critical innovative solutions under the guidance of more experienced engineers
  • Work as an integral team member contributing to the resolution of hardware and software challenges
  • Support in the design and configuration of cyber-secure infrastructure and communications between solution components using industry-standard protocols
  • Support the installation and commissioning of solutions on customer sites
  • Working towards the successful completion of your apprenticeship qualification

Course contents
  • Translate conceptual designs or technical specifications into operational process control systems.
  • Select, use and apply approved problem-solving methods to solve complex problems and determine appropriate solutions such as Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, and Control (DMAIC), Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) and fishbone diagrams.
  • Select the best method for collating and conveying complex information using a range of data sources and supporting documentation.
  • Interpret and produce technical documentation such as schematic diagrams, project plans, fault reports or data analytics using company documentation systems and guidelines.
  • Observe, record and draw accurate and auditable conclusions from data and or developmental or test evidence.
  • Manage assigned projects or programmes of work, taking into account factors such as safety, quality, cost and performance criteria. Apply techniques and processes for project or programme management including escalation, audit or risk management and risk mitigation.
  • Comply with statutory and organisational safety standards and requirements including supporting safety risk assessments and mitigating any risks identified within the control systems environment.
  • Identify resources required to complete control system projects, project tasks or programmes of work, with consideration to factors such as cost, quality, safety, security, environmental impact as applicable to the activity.
  • Create a project or work programme plan and develop activities in a logical process embedding mechanisms for adapting to changing circumstances or requirements.
  • Demonstrate leadership when undertaking control system engineering activities such as system design, integration, operational simulation, installation, testing, pre commissioning, commissioning and maintenance of control systems.
  • Ensure that all instrumentation has been correctly configured and calibrated before use.
  • Identify areas for improvement and lead continuous improvement activities such as improving safety, quality, technology solutions, operational processes, training and development, equipment performance or cost key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Perform checks on control systems documentation to ensure it meets organisational compliance and traceability requirements. Report any non-conformances using the appropriate processes and procedures.
  • Interpret key performance indicators and utilise improvement techniques or processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness such as lean or six sigma.

Your training plan

The apprenticeship:

This structured degree apprenticeship program combines work-based learning with academic study. Our degree apprenticeships are delivered in partnership with leading apprenticeship providers throughout the UK, you will work alongside experienced engineers on real-life projects, develop your technical skills, and study to complete a recognised qualification in Control Systems Engineering.

Our degree apprenticeship programmes are made up of a number of critical components, each designed to ensure that we develop well rounded colleagues who have both the experience, exposure and knowledge to deliver great performance.

You will be a valued member of our team from day 1 and learn to work on real projects from the get-go. From gaining hands-on experience to participating in networking events and structured learning sessions, you’ll get a unique development experience.

As an integral part of your apprenticeship, your progress will be monitored and assessed against government standard requirements. You will compile an evidence folder, demonstrating your areas of learning with accredited certificates of completion for elements of your training. Within the last six months of your apprenticeship, you will undertake an assessment by an independently appointed organisation, where you will be expected to clearly demonstrate your capability to perform in your chosen career.

Desirable qualifications

A Level in:

  • Mathematical-based subject (grade B)
  • Science, technology, or engineering (grade B)

T Level in:

  • Equivalent qualifications (grade DM or above)

BTEC in:

  • Engineering BTEC Level 3 (grade 120 credits at DM or above)
