Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Gain insight and understanding of the employee lifecycle through supporting activities across the team including people systems, health and wellbeing, employee engagement, recruitment, learning and development and equality, diversity, and inclusion
  • Provide support with the Council’s apprenticeship programme - This programme is a system for training a new generation of employees with on-the-job training and study
  • Support might include data management, attending events, administrative duties but also an opportunity to contribute to the overall experience of apprentices
  • Support with strengthening development regarding Equality and Diversity - Work with colleagues to embed equality and diversity across all work areas in a consistent way. Collate and analyse Equality and Diversity data for regular reporting
  • Support improvement work to the employment cycle (recruitment, induction, experience) - You will be part of a team that explores, develops, and reviews ways to ensure that everybody that joins the council has a positive start
  • Analyse data to improve the experience of working at Calderdale Council - We receive information from lots of diverse sources that tells us about internal customer experiences, for example inductions, training, exit interviews. You would be part of a team that considers how to collect, examine, and use the information to make improvements
  • Research and implement Organisation Development initiatives - Sometimes called ‘horizon scanning’ we explore through research how other organisations are doing things, what is coming next, whether we can share ideas and think about how we could put into practice in our organisation
  • Support with Workforce Planning - you would be part of team that works on a range of projects but that comes together to form an over-arching plan for the workforce of Calderdale
  • Support the evaluation of work streams and improvement work - We aim to measure and evaluate the success of the various parts of the employee lifecycle finding out what works well and where we could improve - you would support this and work on specific actions
  • Evaluate and improve existing Organisational Development content / documents as needed ensuring quality and consistency and make recommendations for new content or new methods

Course contents
  • Service Delivery: Delivers excellent customer service on a range of HR queries and requirements, providing solutions, advice and support primarily to managers. Builds managers’ expertise in HR matters, improving their ability to handle repeated situations themselves where appropriate. Uses agreed systems and processes to deliver service to customers. Takes the initiative to meet agreed individual and team KPIs in line with company policy, values, standards. Plans and organises their work, often without direct supervision, to meet commitments and KPIs.
  • Problem Solving: Uses sound questioning and active listening skills to understand requirements and establish root causes before developing HR solutions. Takes ownership through to resolution, escalating complex situations as appropriate.
  • Communication & Interpersonal: Deals effectively with customers/colleagues, using sound interpersonal skills and communicating well through a range of media eg phone, face to face, email, internet. Adapts their style to their audience. Builds trust and sound relationships with customers. Handles conflict and sensitive HR situations professionally and confidentially.
  • Teamwork: Consistently supports colleagues /collaborates within the team and HR to achieve results. Builds/maintains strong working relationships with others in the team and across HR where necessary.
  • Process Improvement: Identifies opportunities to improve HR performance and service; acts on them within the authority of their role. Supports implementation of HR changes/projects with the business.
  • Managing HR Information: Maintains required HR records as part of services delivered. Prepares reports and management information from HR data, with interpretation as required.
  • Personal Development: Keeps up to date with business changes and HR legal/policy/process changes relevant to their role. Seeks feedback and acts on it to improve their performance and overall capability.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Maths and English (grade C / 5 or above)
