Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

As a member of both the school's learning support team and pastoral team, your main jobs and duties will consist of:

Support to pupils:

  • To maintain pupils’ interests and motivation
  • To support individual/group work across the curriculum to raise levels of achievement
  • To facilitate the pupil’s development and skills in the use of resources including IT
  • Assisting pupils with dress/changing for activities/personal hygiene
  • Care and welfare of pupils to include toileting and feeding as required
  • Escorting pupils around school premises
  • 1:1 support to pupils with complex and profound multiple learning difficulties
  • To support pupils with social, emotional, mental health needs

Support to School:

  • Support the ethos of school
  • To maintain school policies and procedures
  • Maintain school routine
  • To promote high standards of behaviour throughout school in accordance with the Behaviour Policy
  • Preparation of rooms, equipment and displays
  • Maintenance of safe environment
  • Contact and links with those with parental responsibility during the working day, as part of the normal consultative and educational process

Support to Teachers:

  • To deliver pre-planned programmes of work both for learning and pastoral
  • Planning and organisation of activities for children and support to teachers in the completion of assessment and other pupil records
  • Liaison with teachers and other staff to obtain, exchange and record information on pupils in accordance with school policy
  • Undertaking duties on a rota basis during mid-morning/mid-afternoon breaks and lunch breaks
  • Support the supervision of individuals/groups of pupils
  • To assist the teacher with supervision of pupils on school trips/visits
  • Contact with parents as part of normal consultative and educational process, e.g. parent’s evenings
  • Keeping materials and equipment in tidy/safe manner 

Support with Curriculum:

  • To assist in the teaching of the curriculum access to the curriculum
  • Support to teachers in the assessment and monitoring of pupils, in accordance with school policy
  • To support individual/ group work across the curriculum to raise levels of achievement and to respond appropriately to pupils
  • Participation in working groups on curriculum matters
  • Involvement in planning meetings
  • Attendance at staff meetings and appropriate training sessions as required
  • Development and preparation of curriculum materials

  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

    As well as working towards a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard, you will learn job-specific skills from experienced colleagues.

    Sandwell apprentices also participate in our bespoke 'Skills Academy' for apprentices. In addition to a workplace mentor, you will receive support throughout your apprenticeship by a dedicated mentor from the Council's Apprenticeships team.

    Essential qualifications

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English Language (grade A*-C/9-4 or L2 equivalent)
    • Maths (grade A*-C/9-4 or L2 equivalent)

    Other requirements

    You must be willing to shadow senior staff, attend relevant training and be flexible to support the needs of the post. You will need to have a due regard for Safeguarding and Child Protection, therefore you will be required to undertake an Enhanced DBS Check prior to commencing in the post. Annual leave must be taken outside of term time only.

    The post is offered on a fixed-term contract to cover the duration of the apprenticeship training.
