Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
- Undertake activities with individuals or groups to ensure their safety and facilitate their physical, emotional and educational development
- Carry out activities and programmes of learning whilst promoting independent learning
- Work to establish a supportive relationship with children and parents
- Encourage acceptance and inclusion of all children
- Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence of pupils
- Assist with the development and implementation of individual plans
- Promote inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
- Provide feedback to pupils
- Undertake structured and agreed learning
- Undertake programmes linked to learning strategies and feed back to the teacher
- Supporting the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use
- Preparing, maintaining and using equipment/resources required to meet the lesson plans/relevant learning activity and assist pupils in their use
- Monitoring the needs of individual children and reporting these to their designated supervisor as appropriate
- Assisting teaching staff in the planning and delivery of work programmes for individuals and groups of children. These programmes may be delivered in a supervised or unsupervised capacity

- Assisting the teaching staff in the smooth transition between educational phases
- Creating and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans and assist with the display of pupils’ work
- Using strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils to achieve learning goals and contribute to raising achievement
- Assisting with the planning of learning activities / lessons
- Monitoring pupils’ responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement/progress as directed
- Providing detailed and regular feedback to the teacher on pupils’ achievement, progress, problems etc
- Promoting good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour
- Establishing constructive relationships with parents/carers
- Administering routine tests and undertake routine marking of pupils’ work
- Attend meetings as required
- Undertake training as required
- Assist with pupil supervision
- Accompany staff and pupils on trips
