Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
The Instrumentation Calibration Services (ICS) department has the responsibility of calibration, maintenance, managed collection, storage and delivery of test & measurement and equipment to support the Barrow site & external commercial customers. Equipment maintained and calibrated includes Electrical, Mechanical, Dimensional & Optical, Temperature, Gas, Fixed Plant and Ionizing Radiation test and measurement equipment.
The core duties include but are not limited to:
- Calibration, maintenance and repair of test and measurement equipment, in line with programme and commercial requirements
- You will work with subject matter experts and experienced professionals to support and provide advice to all build teams on critical measurement activities to ensure equipment meets specification
- Use of cutting edge metrology hardware and software, providing the opportunity to be involved with developing the automation of equipment and laboratory standards
- Calibration of on-site equipment and supporting specialist measurement projects
The role combines multiple functions from within the company, including; Engineering, Quality and Operations, providing a unique perspective to how the wider business operates. We balance hands on calibration with technical measurement support and act as the interface with key stakeholders on projects.
You will spend the first year of your apprenticeship at college developing a basic understanding of engineering, health & safety and quality. You will then spend the second and third year within the business. You will have the opportunity to rotate across various placements within the calibration laboratory and will be cross-skilled between mechanical, dimensional and electrical calibration sub-parameters.

Course contents
- Identify measurement needs and make informed decisions about the measurement process and timescales required, including selection of; tools, equipment, instrumentation and software programs.
- Access and interpret information and documentation to support the measurement process including; data, manuals, specifications, catalogues, calibration certificates and computer-generated information.
- Prepare the work environment and perform tests and checks on measurement tools, equipment, instrumentation and software programs and determine suitability for use.
- Take action when non-conforming tools, equipment, instrumentation, materials and software programs have been identified.
- Plan and perform measurement tasks to ensure verifiable results, using measurement tools, equipment, instrumentation and software programs, following specified procedures and methodologies.
- Retrieve, analyse, interpret, validate and record measurement results and data in line with specifications.
- Contribute to the production of records, reports and other measurement documentation.
- Communicate relevant and specific information through various channels to meet customer requirements.
- Comply with statutory regulations, national and international standards, industry and organisational procedures and requirements relating to codes of conduct when carrying out measurement tasks.
- Comply with relevant Health and Safety legislation, regulation, standards, industry and organisational policies and procedures and requirements relating to safe working practices.
- Comply with policies and procedures relating to the preparation, storage, standards, control and handling of samples, tools, equipment, instrumentation and software programs.

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- 5 GCSE Inc Maths, English & Science or Technical (grade A*-C or 9-4 (or equivalent))
