Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Working alongside and supporting an experienced mechanic in repairing and servicing heavy vehicles which are used by Network Rail and other principal contractors for new projects, upgrades and maintenance on the rail network.
This includes:
- General repairs
- Timed servicing
- Fault finding

Course contents
- Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
- The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
- Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
- The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
- Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
- Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
- Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
- Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
- Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
- To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.
Your training plan
- Monday - Friday 8.00am - 5.00pm at the workshop in Derbyshire. However, travel UK wide and nights away may be required
- One day release day at college in Armthorpe 9.00am - 4.00pm (day to be agreed)
- Flexibility is required as there may be additional overtime due to this ever-changing industry
Total hours per week: 40 hours a week.

Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Level 3.
Due to the specialist nature of the vehicles and the rail industry, extensive training will be provided.
As well as:
- Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths (if required)
- Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)
- Day release training will take place at the GTA training centre in Armthorpe

Other requirements
The role is based at the premises in Derbyshire initially. However, travel UK wide and nights away may be required. The applicant must be 18 or over due to age restrictions within the rail industry. They must have a full UK driving licence and have their own transport. All applicants should consider the location of the job and look into whether it is within suitable travelling distance to them. Please be aware that the day release training day for this course will take place at our Doncaster Centre in Armthorpe.

The company is based in a purpose built depot at Bolsover in the Heart of England and close to the M1. It has 8 covered servicing bays, a test track which includes: Overhead line, third rail, a turn out and a crossing Training facilities & stocks a comprehensive range of spare parts The company services and repairs SRS vehicles of past customers
After this apprenticeship
A full-time role may be offered to the successful candidate on successful completion of the Level 3 qualification.
