Apprentice service technicians are trained in all areas of vehicle technology including engines, advanced electrics, service and maintenance, fault diagnosis, and electric and hybrid vehicle principles.

Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
The role will vary by the employer based upon the specific needs of the location, but the position typically involves:
- Servicing vehicles by carrying out checks and maintenance
- Repairing and replacing faulty parts
- Developing an understanding of workshop equipment, working principles and business objectives
- Advising the service receptionists about required repairs and communicating with customers
- Producing time and work required estimates
- Maintaining repair, service records and customer information

- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
- Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
- Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
- Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
- Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
- Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
- Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
- Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
- Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
- Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
- Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
- Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
- Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Your training plan
- Volvo Apprentices will attend block release training at the state-of-the-art Volvo Training & Development Centre in Daventry. Initially completing a 3-year nationally recognised Level 3 certification in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
- A fully blended programme including webinars, e-books online Volvo learning and attended training, to progress and develop your technical competence in a safe inclusive environment
- Attended training is complemented by a combination of regular coaching & mentoring visits at the workplace to review performance, portfolio progress and working relationships
- Training schedule has yet to be agreed upon, further details will be made available at a later date
- Before the Standard is met, all apprentices must hold a certificate that meets the EU’s 2014 F-gas regulation

Essential qualifications
GCSE or equivalent in:
- English (grade C/4)
- Maths (grade C/4)
