Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Alder Security are looking for an apprentice based in the Abingdon area due to company growth, this is a multi-disciplined Fire & Security three year apprenticeship. Day to day learning and working will involve but not exclusive to the below.

  • Running cables, isolating wires, setting up CCTV cameras and linking them with IP addresses,  Internal and External cable installations
  • Cable Termination
  • Fluke Test and Documentation
  • Resolution Testing and Documentation
  • Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
  • System functional Test plans
  • Attend manufacturer product training
  • H&S training/IPAF

This apprenticeship includes block release one week every eight weeks to the Watford training centre.

Course contents
  • Comply with safety legislation, codes of practice, risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and apply control measures.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
  • Apply and implement system design, planning and installations including additional components to existing systems.
  • Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose and repair faults.
  • Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations and standards.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
  • Carries out risk assessments.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector specific terminology.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector specific terminology through written means.
  • Plan and install systems cabling.
  • Carry out maintenance activities on fire detection and alarm systems and their components.
  • Carry out maintenance activities on intrusion alarm, access control, video surveillance (CCTV) and their components.
  • Your training plan

    • Skills for Security will deliver the apprenticeship training in block release.
    • You will be required to complete all training tasks allocated during your block release weeks at the training centre and gather any site evidence needed to supplement your studies.
    • You will be required to complete an annual assessment at the training centre and take part in any additional training courses that the company require you to complete.
    • The employer will mentor and coach you on the job.

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • Maths (grade 4)

    Other requirements

    The apprenticeship is 36 months and therefore, full commitment is needed. You will be required to travel to the Watford training centre. Salary can be negotiated based on successful trial.
