Rate of pay, (£8.00 phr),25% above standard apprentice rate. 4 day working week. 28 days annual leave including bank holidays – two weeks to be used at Christmas when we are closed. Meals, fruit, tea, coffee & juice provided.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Understand children’s individual needs and respond accordingly
  • Ensure children feel included, safe and valued by promoting equality and valuing diversity
  • Recognise child abuse and neglect and follow up any concerns with your manager
  • Demonstrate understanding of health and safety
  • Ensure someone known and agreed by nursery collects each child.
  • Effectively manage situations where children are ill, in line with nursery policy
  • Record all accidents appropriately
  • Positively manage children’s behaviour
  • Maintain good hygiene and cleanliness of children and the environment 
  • Eat meals with the children and ensure that mealtimes are a time of pleasant social sharing. 
  • Establish and maintain warm and trusting relationships with children  
  • Be a key person for a small number of children
  • Build professional relationships with parents 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with other team members and engage in effective and professional team working 
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills 
  • Follow children’s interests and provide activities suitable to the age range, interests and needs of children  
  • Observe children and contribute to the completion of children’s individual profiles and keep a proper record of their achievements  
  • Ensure appropriate resources are well maintained and accessible to children 
  • Encourage children to contribute to the tidiness of indoor and outdoor areas 
  • Maximise opportunities to use the outdoor learning environment 
  • Seek opportunities to involve children in learning which takes them in to the local community e.g. park, library, post office 
  • Offer guidance and support to students and volunteers 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of play  
  • Demonstrate an awareness of basic play materials  
  • Take responsibility for equipment used within nursery 
  • Make your environment interesting, attractive and accessible to every child 
  • Proactively participate and engage in activities with children 
  • Motivate and sustain children’s interest in an activity 
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the areas and aspects of
  • Learning and Development in the EYFS 
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions and performance reviews and be involved in all out of working hours activities e.g. Christmas Party 
  • Identify your own training needs and attend any necessary courses 
  • Take ownership of your personal development and implement your personal development plan 
  • Adhere to all nursery policies and procedures  
  • Direct any concerns or complaints to Management 
  • Work alongside the Managers and staff team to demonstrate the values that support the achievement of nursery’s vision.  
  • To positively publicise the nursery and its services 
  • Demonstrate flexibility within the working practices of nursery.  Be prepared to help where needed, and undertake additional duties as required, commensurate with the level of the job. 
  • Respect the confidentiality of information received. 
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the EYFS, its themes, commitments and best practice. 
  • Take care of your own safety and that of others, complying with health and safety procedures and instructions. 
  • Assist by reporting to the managers any hazard, accident, damage or defect in order that remedial action may be undertaken.

Course contents
  • Recognise when a child or a colleague is in danger or at risk of abuse and act to protect them in line with safeguarding policy and procedure.
  • Apply legislation, policy and procedure to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the setting (for example, food safety, diets, starting solid food, allergies, COSHH, and accidents, injuries, and emergencies).
  • Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice.
  • Teach children to develop skills to manage risk and maintain their own and others safety.
  • Use a range of communication methods, including technology, with other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional, collaborative relationships with others involved in the education and care of the child.
  • Undertake the role and responsibilities of key person.
  • Recognise and apply theories of attachment to develop effective relationships with children.

Level 3 Early Years Educator Standard. 

Apprentices will undertake their training within the rooms as well as having time out of the rooms to participate in seminars, continue written work and attend meetings with tutors etc.  
We also provide in house training to support our staff continuous professional development: 

  • Fire training 
  • Baby training 
  • Safer food better business 
  • Annual safeguarding training   

Mode of delivery:  

  • A mix of blended learning including day release in college, online classes and tutor workplace visits   

Course content:  

The Level 3 Apprenticeship is delivered in partnership with the workplace, you will be expected to attend college/online meetings and face to face meetings with your tutor, where you will gain knowledge and understanding of working within the early years sector.   
You will develop skills on the job where you will be supported by a workplace mentor.  

An Assessor from Leeds City College will visit you on a regular basis to support your learning journey. 

The Apprenticeship Standards comprises of: 

  • Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours for the Level 3 Early Years Educator    

Functional Skills qualifications: 

  • Level 2 Functional Skill in English  
  • Level 2 Functional Skill in maths 
  • Training will also include paediatric first aid qualification 
    End point assessment:   
  • Observation of practice with question and answer  
  • Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4/C)
  • Maths (grade 4/C)
  • Early Years practitioner (grade Pass)
