The starting salary will be at least £10 per hour. After 1 year's service employees qualify for a discretionary annual bonus scheme. The bonus is based on the profitability of the business and the contribution of the individual.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

You will be working in a busy and growing Chartered Accountants Practice based in the heart of Worcester. We have a broad range of small business clients, including limited companies, partnerships and sole traders, and you will be responsible for a wide range of tasks that contribute to the delivery of a professional service to them. We operate digitally (and paperless) on Apple Mac computers, using high-quality software packages and digital applications to deliver our services. 

Your duties and responsibilities will develop and grow over time in line with your training and personal development.

They will include: 

  • Digital bookkeeping
  • Producing reports and analysis to support clients’ business needs
  • Preparation and checking of VAT returns
  • Contributing to the production of annual accounts, corporation tax and partnership tax returns
  • Maintaining statutory records for clients
  • Preparation of Self-Assessment Tax Returns
  • Client record keeping using online systems
  • Contributing to the smooth running of a busy office
  • Communicating with clients in person, by telephone and online
  • Supporting clients with digital software

We offer a full and supported package of training both on and off site.  We use Xero accounting software, and you will gain accreditation as a Xero Adviser as part of your training.

This position is very much seen as a first rung on the accountancy ladder and the breadth of experience and quality of training offered will provide an excellent start to your career.

Course contents
  • Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
  • Your training plan

    • Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located in Worcester (WR4 9GN). 
    • You will receive training one day per week which is a combination of face-to-face and remote, as per your assigned training plan. 
    • Additional training for functional skills in English and maths will be undertaken if needed.  
    • You will receive monthly visits from your assigned Learning and Development Specialist, who will set you work, monitor your development and wellbeing, and discuss training sessions.  
    • They will also prepare you for your End Point Assessment to gain your Assistant Accountant Level 3 qualification. 
    • There is also a five-day teambuilding residential trip that is held in the spring of each year offered to all apprentices on programme. 

    Requirements

    Essential qualifications

    GCSE in:

    • English (grade 5-9)
    • Maths (grade 5-9)

    Desirable qualifications

    A Level in:

    • Accountancy (grade A*- E)
    • Accountancy AAT2 (grade Pass)

    Other requirements

    Our office is on the second floor of a modern city centre building. Unfortunately, there is no lift available, which may make this position challenging for individuals who have difficulty navigating stairs. This role is an office-based position given the level of support and mentoring that will be both required and given. The position will also involve contribution to the smooth running of the office and service given to visiting clients. It cannot therefore be performed remotely. Opportunities for remote working, given that we operate digitally, will be available after completion of the apprenticeship period.
