Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

Starting in January 2025 you will join a co-hort of learners at our Inspiring Learning site in North Devon. We offer a unique, immersive learning experience designed to equip you with the practical skills and knowledge you will need to succeed in the fast-paced world of professional cooking.

You'll benefit from a combination of intensive block delivery sessions in a state-of-the-art community kitchen and real-world on-the-job training with a local employer in the North Devon area.

Whether creating culinary masterpieces or simply enjoying the art of cooking, our academy offers a comprehensive curriculum developed by industry experts to kickstart your journey towards a rewarding career.

What will you do as a Production chef?

You'll work as part of a team in time-bound and often challenging kitchen environments, for example; schools, hospitals, the Armed Forces, care homes and high street casual dining or pub kitchens.

You may be working with centrally developed standardised recipes and menus, producing food often in high volumes.

Important skills in the role are having highly methodical organisational skills, energy, accuracy, attention to detail and being mindful of the importance of sustainability and protecting the environment.

Course contents
  • Check, prepare, assemble, cook, regenerate, hold and present food meeting the needs of the customers and maintaining organisational standards and procedures.
  • Use kitchen tools and equipment correctly to produce consistently high quality dishes according to specifications.
  • Take responsibility for the cleanliness, organisation and smooth running of the work area.
  • Produce dishes to suit individuals’ specific dietary, religious and allergenic  needs as required.
  • Operate within all regulations, legislation and procedural requirements.
  • Complete and maintain documentation to meet current legislative guidelines.
  • Use effective methods of communication with all colleagues, managers and customers to promote a positive image of yourself and the organisation.
  • Work in a fair and empathetic manner to support team members while offering a quality provision.
  • Work to ensure customer expectations are met.
  • Work collaboratively to uphold the vision, values and objectives of the organisation.
  • Use technology appropriately.
  • Maintain quality and consistency in food production by using resources in line with organisations’ financial constraints, style, specifications and ethos.
  • Identify own learning style, personal development needs and opportunities and take action to meet those needs.
  • Use feedback positively to improve performance. 

Your training plan

You'll initially undertake a 3 week block programme at our Inspiring Learning North Devon site, learning from our Industry Specialists.

Along with joining the new Chef Academy, you will complete your 12 month apprenticeship.

You will benefit from 1-2-1 teaching and observations during that period. A training specialist will coach, teach, and support the apprentice at the workplace on a one-to-one basis, visiting at regular and agreed intervals. Face-to-face teaching as a group; Block delivery throughout the year with other apprentices in the area.

Tutorials; Apprentices will be offered regular 1-2-1 tutorial time remotely with their specialist trainer. E-learning; We provide an e-learning platform with work and activities for apprentices to complete

Math and English Functional Skills will be supported if necessary.

Desirable qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English and Maths (grade 4)

Other requirements

This is a physical and active role and you will need to be alert and have the ability to get involved. Have you already got relevant knowledge or experience in hospitality? That would be ideal but not essential.
