Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Our Production Apprenticeship Scheme is a 4-year program. We offer three separate Apprenticeships; descriptions of which are below. Please note, you need to be comfortable with working at height or in confined spaces as required.
- Fitter - Fitters put together components and sub-assemblies that go into the aircraft on our customers’ final assembly lines. Fitters work to manufacturing and engineering instructions / drawings and will use skills including: Drilling, reaming and countersinking, Riveting and bolting, Using automated / robotic drilling equipment, Functional testing of mechanical systems
- Machinist - Our Integrated Machining Facility manufactures small and large components. Materials used are Aluminum, Titanium, Steel and Composite Materials. Skills / knowledge developed will include: Operating 3, 4 & 5 axis CNC Milling machine tools, Operating co-ordinate measuring machines (CMM), conventional and digital measuring equipment, Understanding processes, procedures and engineering drawings
- Fabricator - Fabricators use their skills to produce components and assemblies, including fuel, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Skills/Knowledge gained will include: Manual and automated cutting techniques, Forming and joining techniques, Fabrication of metallic components, Operating CNC forming machines, Using precision measuring equipment

Training
An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Course contents
Your training plan
- Year 1: The majority of your first year will be working offsite at college completing your foundation training. Towards the end of the first year, you’ll complete a return to site induction followed by onsite training
- Years 2 & 3: You will undertake Business Familiarisation rotation placements. During your placements, you will document work that you complete review this regularly with your GKN training advisor
- Year 4: You’ll be assigned to your final department. Your practical observation assessments will be completed, alongside the underpinning knowledge questions. You’ll also complete the End Point Assessment (EPA)

Essential qualifications
GCSE or equivalent in:
- English (grade 4/C or equivalent)
- maths (grade 4/C or equivalent)
- Science (grade 4/C or equivalent)
Let the company know about other relevant qualifications and industry experience you have. They can adjust the apprenticeship to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
You must have at least four GCSE’s Maths: 9 – 4. English: 9 – 4. Science: 9 – 4. Plus one more: 9 – 4. If you live outside the EU you will need a UK work permit before applying for an apprenticeship. After this apprenticeship
- Progression into a full-time role after completion, but this is not guaranteed
- Further progression may well be available in other areas within our sector, upon successful completion of the apprenticeship
