GKN Aerospace Filton specialises in the design & manufacture of large complex structural wing assemblies, detailed metallic components & wing systems for a combination of both civil & military aircraft. Whatever part you play, you’ll be helping us deliver operational excellence to our customers.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Maintenance Technician - Maintenance Engineers carry out scheduled maintenance & breakdown repairs on complex machinery such as large CNC machines, chemical treatment plants & equipment.

Maintenance Engineers need to have an analytical approach, as they will be involved in problem solving & cross-functional communication. 

During your Apprenticeship, you will develop skills/knowledge including: 

  • Machine diagnostics including repair & scheduled maintenance of CNC, conventional machines & treatment facilities.
  • Understanding of electrical, hydraulic & pneumatic systems
    An understanding of manufacturing processes & procedures.

Training

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Your training plan

Year 1: The majority of your first year will be working offsite at college. Towards the end of the first year, you will undertake a return to site induction followed by onsite GKN training.

Years 2 & 3: You will undertake Business Familiarisation rotation placements within your occupational role area. During your placements, you will document work that you complete & review this regularly with your GKN training advisor. 

Year 4: You will complete your Technical Certificate & continue on-the-job training in your final department. This is where you will complete your Level 3 Competence Qualification as well as your End Point Assessment. 

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English (grade 4/C or equivalent)
  • Science (grade 4/C or equivalent)
  • maths (grade 5/C or equivalent)

Let the company know about other relevant qualifications and industry experience you have. They can adjust the apprenticeship to reflect what you already know.

You must have at least five GCSE’s Maths: 9 – 5 English: 9 – 4 Science: 9 – 4 Plus two more: 9 – 4 If you live outside the EU you will need a UK work permit before you can apply for an apprenticeship.
