Summary

An exciting opportunity to gain experience and expertise in public health intelligence, working as part of the DHSC Local Knowledge and Intelligence Service (LKIS). Our goal is to support more effective and efficient regional & local health intelligence systems and improved data-informed decision-making on health and care.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Successful participation in and completion of the Health and Care Intelligence Specialist (Level 7) apprenticeship
Providing advice and support in the use of common sources of data for public health purposes
Applying analytical, statistical and epidemiological methods to a range of public health data to support routine and ad hoc analytical projects and tasks
Planning, managing and delivering on a range of assigned projects requiring analytic input, including negotiating and agreeing the most appropriate data output, initiating and planning workloads and setting delivery timescales
Ensuring compliance with quality assurance policy and procedures and taking responsibility for producing data quality reports on hosted databases
Participating in an ad hoc health intelligence request service for users of the services and providing specialist advice on appropriate use of this information
Supporting the local translation and dissemination of health intelligence outputs through awareness raising and signposting
Using a variety of methods including written briefings and oral presentations to communicate the implications of public health analytical outputs for action to improve local population health to stakeholders from a range of backgrounds
Supporting the training and induction of OHID staff as well as participating in the programme of training in health intelligence for external stakeholders
Attending meetings with key local stakeholders and playing an active role in the hosted network for public health intelligence specialists.
Working collaboratively as part of the analytical capability within OHID and wider DHSC assisting colleagues in the delivery of the analytical work programme
Ensuring personal, and promoting team, compliance with corporate policies in relation to security, confidentiality and release of information
Supervision of relevant staff as directed.

Course contents

Collect data by utilising a variety of tools (e.g. databases, software systems, APIs, digital devices).
Extract, import, clean, and manipulate a wide range of quantitative and qualitative data.
Undertake advanced statistical and epidemiological analysis.
Interpret and present advanced statistical and epidemiological analyses being mindful of the risks associated with presenting and publishing health information.
Undertake linkage of health and care data accurately and in accordance with the relevant information governance requirements.
Design and specify data flows, collection, storage and collation mechanisms for both qualitative and quantitative data.
Develop data visualisations appropriate for a range of audiences and contexts using a variety of analytical tools including statistical programming software and industry standard packages (e.g. R, Tableau, PowerBI).
Professionally interpret and present health and care intelligence analyses and recommendations in a well structured report.
Formulate analysis questions and hypotheses which are answerable given the data available.
Investigate patterns and variations in determinants, diseases, and other factors affecting health and care outcomes.
Design and undertake surveys, audits or research (e.g. to investigate patterns of disease or support service development).
Review, and critically appraise evidence and research including survey design and analysis. Summarise and disseminate relevant literature.
Work with users of information to clarify their information needs, focusing on understanding the problem to solve or decision to inform, and tailor reports and presentations accordingly.
Provide advice and guidance to internal and external stakeholders at all organisational levels, on data collection, analysis and interpretation.
Develop and deliver management/Board level presentations which influence senior decision makers, both non-technical and technical.
Communicate sensitively, accurately and appropriately to audiences from technical and non-technical backgrounds.
Comply with, implement and advise on local and national data protection and confidentiality legislation, policies, procedures and any other relevant legal frameworks.
Demonstrate effective leadership and change management skills to influence the use of analysis within an organisation, managing analytical teams and adhering to the principles of continuous improvement.

Your training plan

An apprenticeship is an exciting opportunity to ‘earn while you learn’ by combining theoretical learning with practical ‘on-the-job’ experience; allowing you to work towards a nationally recognised qualification, while building skills in your daily role and earning a salary. An apprenticeship also allows you to secure a qualification with no tuition or student fees as the programme is fully funded by the department.

You will spend 80% of your contracted working hours on your day-to-day responsibilities and 20% of your time will be dedicated to your training. The apprenticeship will provide you with new skills to apply to your job role, ensuring you are continuously learning in a supportive environment.

Upon successful competition of the end point assessment, you will achieve a Level 7 apprenticeship as a Health and Care Intelligence Specialist.
