Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
- You must know/understand setting policy and procedure for safeguarding.
- You must know how and who to report child protection concerns to e.g. who is the child protection officer.
- You must be fully aware of who is authorised to collect the chid from the setting, and the procedure to follow if someone unknown arrives.
- You will be required to complete courses in relation to safeguarding. This is to ensure you have up to date knowledge. It may be necessary to complete training outside of your usual working hours.
- You must understand the nursery policy for behaviour management and always adhere to our guidelines. No physical interventions are to be used. You must fully understand the age and stage of development of the children you are working with and use methods that are appropriate to manage incidents of behaviour.
- You must fully always implement nursery procedure for the administration of medicines. This includes how medicines are stored, handled, which staff are authorised to give medicines and how we communicate each child’s needs.
Qualification, training, support, skills
- Your qualification level will have been assessed at interview, if required you will be requested to complete additional training to ensure your qualification level is full and relevant.
- You must keep yourself up to date in areas of particular importance to enhance your work with the children.
- You will be required to support any workplace students in the setting sharing your skills and knowledge with them.
Ratios
- You must know the ratio of staff to children for all nursery rooms.
- You must know how to complete registers and headcount books and ensure these are up to date.
Safety and suitability of premises, environment and equipment
- It is your responsibility to maintain the safety of the playing areas both indoors and outdoors.
- Appropriately risk assess your immediate environment and remove any hazards you identify.
- Each room will have individual procedures in place to maintain the cleanliness of the toys and equipment; these must be always followed.

About this company
Happy Days Nursery is situated in Quinton, Birmingham and first opened it’s doors in 1991. We provide private day care for children aged between 0-5yrs old. We are open Monday – Friday from 7.30am to 6pm, 52 weeks of the year (excluding Bank Holidays).
