Summary

District Sports are seeking to appoint an apprentice Sports Coach to join their team. The role will provide a unique opportunity to gain insight across a range of sports, from Basketball to Gymnastics, Football to Archery, Tennis to Dodgeball, or even something completely different! Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Using your passion for sport, the role will involve delivering inspiring sports activities to young people; whilst also offering the opportunity to undertake further training and coaching qualifications. The role will additionally require some travel between schools and an independence in setting-up and developing sports provision. Furthermore, the post will also suit an individual with business acumen, who can help to support and develop the business into the future.

The role will be varied and duties will include:

  • To deliver exciting and engaging coaching sessions that enthuse young people from the outset
  • Undertaking administrative tasks inclusive of registers, attendances and emailing schools/venues
  • To develop the fundamental motor skills of young people to support their enjoyment, achievement and development
  • Interacting with parents, relatives and venue staff in a professional manner at all times
  • Setting up and clearing away activities, in addition to overseeing the maintenance of equipment
  • Travelling to various local schools, clubs and activity centers
  • Undertaking business development activities with a view to expanding the reach of the business moving forwards
  • Some flexibility will be required within this role, in addition to other generic duties as required

Course contents
  • Planning and adapting sessions and activities that respond to customer feedback and encourage customers to develop a lifelong activity habit.
  • Coaching or leading pre-planned sport or physical activity sessions that are attractive to the target audience(s) and develop motivational relationships with customers.
  • Promoting a physical activity offer, (including but not exclusively) organised play and sport in the community which supports individuals on their behaviour change journey.
  • Working collaboratively with sports clubs and other community assets – including volunteers, public services, youth workers, the police and community champions.
  • Supporting customers to co-produce rewarding volunteering opportunities.
  • Supporting families to participate together in sport and physical activity.
  • Working effectively with customer insight to overcome individual, community and societal barriers to participation in physical activity and sport.
  • Contributing to the employer’s design of activities and services and practising the employer’s organisation’s values, policies and procedures.
  • Contributing to teams that deliver community events and festivals.
  • Supporting organisations to evaluate, develop and promote sessions and other opportunities such as outdoor group exercise and informal social play.
  • Maintaining personal safety and wellbeing, as well as that of customers.
  • Managing disruptive behaviours from individuals within the group setting.
  • Encouraging customers to be regularly active – both formally and informally – within sports clubs or leisure facilities including open-space.
  • Effectively using social media and technology, appropriately, to deliver targeted messages to identified customer groups for example children, teenagers, adults and older adults.
  • Effectively monitor and evaluate activities, sessions and projects using technology platforms to maintain accurate records and produce timely reports.

    • Level 2 Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship Standard- striving to provide the successful candidate with an overarching knowledge and understanding in how to support curriculum Physical Education sessions and wide sports provision
    • Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid - as we believe PE and School Sport are the areas of the curriculum where you are most likely to need these skills
    • Prevent Training Safeguarding Training Functional Skills in maths and English (candidates with existing GCSE's in maths and English at Grade C/4 or above/equivalent will be exempt)
    • Training will take place at Plymouth Argyle

    Other requirements

    Experience of working within a sporting, educational or administrative context would be advantageous, however a determination to see young people succeed is of the utmost importance. Strong problem solving, communication and team work skills will form a key element of the position, with the successful candidate anticipated to regularly utilise their skills in forward planning and initiative. The ability to work effectively as part of a team will form an essential part of this role; with the ability to adapt plans and have the foresight to potential obstacles being of paramount importance. Furthermore, an ability to motivate and inspire young people in striving toward their full potential will form an essential part of this role, with the ability to plan and adapt coaching sessions to keep them fun, engaging and exciting. Individuals with outstanding organisational skills are sought, however further training will be provided to support the long term development of the right candidate.
