Summary

We are looking for a trainee Accounts Assistant to join our expanding accountancy practice located in Mirfield. Our work is varied and interesting and we provide a friendly, flexible, and proactive all year-round service to small businesses and individuals in the local area.

£12,480 to £22,308 a year

The remuneration package will reflect that, commensurate with NMW for age, plus recognition of qualifications and relevant prior experience.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

The Role:

  • During your first few weeks, you will have a full induction to our firm, and training on all the systems that you will be using on a day-to-day basis. These include Office 365, TaxCalc, QuickBooks Online and Dext
  • You will also undergo the basic training required of all staff members. This includes our telephony protocols, how to assist visitors, (those with appointments and walk-ins) and how to maintain client records
  • You will learn about the preparation of financial accounts, interpretation of financial data and accounting and tax legislation

This is an extremely varied role in which you will need to have a flexible mindset and a willingness to learn and update your skillset regularly. We are a very technology-orientated firm, so our ideal candidate is someone who would enjoy engaging with new technologies in the accountancy sector and is committed to producing the high quality of data that such technologies require.

You will be mentored by a Senior Accountant who will give you direct guidance in developing your professional skills.

Course contents
  • Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

    Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship Level 3.

    An Assistant Accountant provides support to internal and external customers and will work predominately either as an assistant accountant within practice or alternatively within the finance function of an organisation.

    Part of their role will involve assisting in the day-to-day financial activities such as data entry to month end management accounts and/or year-end financial statements.

    In addition, the Assistant Accountant may find themselves involved in regulatory financial requirements such as the completion of VAT returns or assisting in the preparation of tax computations.

    You will gather work-based evidence to demonstrate the required Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours during your apprenticeship. The apprentice will evidence that they are collating and recording data on financial information and performance accurately by applying accounting standards and concepts and will evidence analysis of reconciliation, payroll, VAT return information. They will need to prepare accurate, management information and use IT packages for this.

    Candidates are required to have achieved AAT Level 2 or have at least 1 years’ experience of accounting duties to be accepted on the Level 3 programme. Maths and English grade C/4 or equivalent are required. Original certificates are required as evidence.

    The recommended time to complete is 15 - 18 months.

    The AAT L3 course starts in January. The day release is Tuesday.

    End Point Assessment:

    Assessment will be through examinations in Bookkeeping, Computerised Accounting and AAT Level 3 Accounting.

    Apprentices will also be assessed through a synoptic end-test covering the knowledge & skills gained, a portfolio comprising a range of evidence produced in the workplace and a reflective discussion which will be a structured interview.

    Essential qualifications

    GCSE in:

    • 5 strong GCSE or equivalent results (grade 4 or C or above/equivalent)
    • Maths and Enhlish (grade C/4 or above)
