Summary

Hands on experience in warehousing storage and distribution from goods in through to stock control, picking, and despatch. Valuable experience with state-of-the-art warehousing technologies such as voice picking and RF guns. Learn about operating safely in a warehouse environment and operating around MHE. Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Picking to meet customer orders using modern technology such as voice picking
  • Safe use of packing equipment such as spin-wrap machines
  • Learning skills in despatch, organising loads for loading onto articulated vehicles
  • Assisting with goods inwards, breaking pallets down and checking incoming deliveries
  • Learning about traceability and effective food safety and quality control
  • Stock control operations such as counting stock and stock administration
  • Picking up Microsoft Office skills with administration of stock using key programs such as Microsoft Excel
  • Loading articulated vehicles with the assistance of forklift drivers
  • Be immersed in a team with years of collective warehouse storage and distribution experience

  • Conduct risk assessments within the working environment.
  • Apply safe working practices in line with associated health and safety legislation and company policy.
  • Receive products in line with organisational procedures.
  • Store and pick products in line with organisational procedures.
  • Dispatch products in line with organisational procedures.
  • Decant, pack products in line with organisational procedures.
  • Communicate with others verbally, for example internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers.
  • Communicate in writing with others, for example internal and external customers, colleagues and managers.
  • Load and unload products, considering the product that is to be moved and its current and planned destination.
  • Use tools and equipment to aid in product handling.
  • Use information technology and digital systems. Comply with GDPR and cyber security.
  • Locate and use operational information, electronic or paper based, required to fulfil contractual requirements.
  • Select, prepare, and use packaging materials that reduce waste and mitigate environmental impacts.
  • support under instruction scheduled and unscheduled stock taking activities relevant to the organisation and product.
  • Identify and escalate problems beyond own responsibility.
  • Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.

Other requirements

Overtime and weekend work available in line with seasonal uplift. Manual handling is involved with suitable training and PPE provided.

After this apprenticeship

Potential for full-time employment on a 40-hour contract, counterbalance and reach forklift licenses, progression into supervision and management positions. Progression into other areas of the business such as transport with scope for HGV licences.
