Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
There are 4 key areas within the business, these are:
1. Pre-preparation: We receive raw materials direct from our clients, this could be rolls of material, sheets of high-pressure laminate, flooring in tile form or rolls etc.
This area understands the best way to treat the many products we work with and advises the best way to progress it.
There is a degree of understanding of mathematics which would be explained.
The product would be prepared and treated so that the next area can pick up and work as efficiently as possible. As with all other areas, a good eye for detail is needed.
2. Preparation: When the product has been completed in Pre-preparation it is then moved onto preparation, in this area the product is cut down to smaller sample sizes using Automated Guillotines and Automated Pinking machines.
Also, in this area there are a few smaller ancillary machines, these include paper drills, automated hole punches, eyelet machines, wire stitcher.
3. Sample mounting department: We currently have 18 sample mounting machines of varying sizes; this is a key area and one which defines us from many manually hand mounting businesses. Skills are required for the setting up of these machines which will of course be taught. A good eye for detail is vital.
4. Bench: A vital area which often knits all of the previous areas together, when automated machinery cannot be utilised then we rely on highly skilled staff to manually produce sample cards.
