This five year Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship will develop your skills and knowledge in the production environment here at Waters Wilmslow, through study and hands on training.

Annual wage: £21,000 a year

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Job Role

To assemble the mechanical and electrical elements of Waters Mass Spectrometry products in line with business requirements
To process customer orders for dispatch in line with the departmental process
Ensure compliance with Company policies and procedures (safety, employment, expenses, training, PPE etc).
To ensure the implementation and recording of engineering change is carried out effectively within the department.
To configure and prepare instruments/upgrades to relevant procedures and build specifications in readiness for New Product Operation Test.
Ensure equipment/tools used are within calibration.

Course contents

Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.

Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.

Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.

Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.

Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.

Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.

Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.

Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.

Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).

Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.

Reporting work outcomes or issues.

Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.

Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.

Operating within limits of responsibility.

Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Your training plan

The successful applicant will be working towards an Apprenticeship in Engineering Fitter. This will include NVQ L3, Technical Certificate and Functional Skills.

More training information

Please be aware you will be working in the company and will also be required to attend Alliance Learning for the Day release / Block release training.

GCSE in:

English (grade A-C (4-9))
Maths (grade A-C (4-9))

Other requirements

The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £6.40per hour. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16 to18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
