Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

In co-operation with the Daycare Manager and other senior staff;

  • To help staff and support children's learning and all-round development
  • To know and support the vision, policies, and procedures of the Centre
  • To work flexibly and co-operatively within the team
  • To be a key person for a group of children

Additional Responsibilities:

  • To attend to the health, welfare and safety of the children at all times
  • To build positive relationships with children and their families
  • Help tp provide exciting and challenging appropriate activities for young children to promote their learning and development in an involving, playful way
  • To complete individual learning journals for key children, recording significant developments in their learning and identifying and planning for next steps in learning and development
  • Support every child, as an unique child, through responding to interests and fascination through activities
  • Provide rich language opportunities for all children
  • Provide additional support according to each individual child's needs
  • Help to maintain inclusive, enabling environments with regard to cleanliness, tidiness and organisation
  • Always maintain the safeguarding of children, in line with nursery policies
  • Help children with nappy changing and toileting and self-care skills
  • Attend training and team meetings, to enhance professional and personal development
  • Participate when possible, in social and community activities, which the nursery undertakes
  • To work at all times within the guidelines of current nursery policies
  • To build appropriate professional relationships with all parents

  • Support babies and young children through a range of transitions.e.g moving onto school, moving house or the birth of a sibling
  • Recognise when a child is in danger, at risk of serious harm or abuse and explain the procedures to be followed to protect them. Types of abuse including: domestic, neglect , physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
  • Identify risks and hazards in the work setting and during off site visits.relating to both children and staff
  • Demonstrate skills and understanding for the prevention and control of infection, including hand washing, food preparation and hygiene, dealing with spillages safely, safe disposal of waste, using correct personal protective equipment.
  • Use equipment, furniture and materials safely, following the manufacturers’ instructions and setting’s requirements.
  • Encourage children to be aware of personal safety and the safety of others and develop personal hygiene practices (including oral hygiene).
  • Promote health and wellbeing in settings by encouraging babies and young children to consume healthy and balanced meals, snacks and drinks appropriate for their age and be physically active through planned and spontaneous activity throughout the day, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Carry out respectful care routines appropriate to the development, stage, dignity and needs of the child, including eating (feeding and weaning/complimentary feeding), nappy changing procedures, potty/toilet training, care of skin, teeth and hair and rest and sleep provision.
  • Communicate with all children in ways that will be understood, including verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Extend children’s development and learning through verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Encourage babies and young children to use a range of communication methods.

  • Your training plan

    • Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Apprenticeship Standard
    • Functional Skills English and Maths (if needed)

    Over the course of 15 - 18 months (dependent upon the level of course an apprentice is being enrolled onto), you will study an Early Years apprenticeship programme.

    This will contain units such as health & safety in a childcare setting, holistic child development, safeguarding in a childcare setting, child development, communication with children, purposeful play and educational programmes, supporting children with special educational needs, collaborative working in early years childcare, well-being principles for children and at higher levels, child protection, data, supporting key life transitions and behaviour management (these modules may differ).

    Our delivery of training is through blended learning. Supported by one of our sector specialist tutors, they will deliver teaching sessions using various methods including face to face teaching, Skype, Facetime, telephone and peer virtual classroom whilst using our interactive multi-sensory teaching resources.

    Teaching sessions are normally bi-weekly or monthly, depending on the learner’s preferred learning style. Additionally, the tutor will provide the support required to ensure the learner enjoys and ultimately successfully achieves their goals and completes their training. We want learners to feel that our team are approachable at any stage of their learning journey.

    If you do not hold GCSE maths & English (or equivalent), these will be delivered alongside the apprenticeship programme.

    • Once the Level 2 apprenticeship is completed, you will then be offered the opportunity to complete a Level 3 apprenticeship to become a fully qualified Nursery Practitioner.
