There are various shifts, some starting at 8am and some finishing at 6.30pm or 7pm if duty doctor requires assistance. 30 minute unpaid lunch break on each shift if they are longer than 6.5 hours duration.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Opening and preparing of premises punctually in the morning, and strict adherence to closing procedures before leaving in the evening
  • Dealing with patients face-to-face
  • Answering telephone/taking and recording messages
  • Booking and cancelling appointments
  • Filing and extracting of medical records, patient letters, and results
  • Arranging repeat prescriptions using computerised system
  • Ensuring patient details are current (name, address, contact no’s, etc.)
  • Issuing receipts for payments given
  • Chaperoning patients with GPs as and when necessary
  • Input of data onto a computer
  • Ensure complaints are dealt with according to the practice protocol
  • Any other reasonable request from GPs or superiors
  • Attending mandatory training

  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills, along with summarising language during face-to-face communications; and/or
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate communication skills, along with reinforcement techniques (to confirm understanding) during non-facing customer interactions.
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use an appropriate ‘tone of voice’ in all communications, including written and digital, that reflect the organisation’s brand.
  • Provide clear explanations and offer options in order to help customers make choices that are mutually beneficial to both the customer and your organisation.
  • Be able to organise yourself, prioritise your own workload/activity and work to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate patience and calmness.
  • Show you understand the customer’s point of view.
  • Use appropriate sign-posting or resolution to meet your customers needs and manage expectations.
  • Maintain informative communication during service recovery.
  • Your training plan

    • You will work towards the Customer service practitioner
      Level 2 apprenticeship standard. This apprenticeship will be delivered in the workplace.

    Essential qualifications

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English (grade D/3 or above)
    • Maths (grade D/3 or above)
